Synopsis from IMDb: It’s Year 2 at Hogwarts, and Harry Potter (Radcliffe), Ron (Grint) and Hermione (Watson) are back learning, but their year doesn’t go past quietly. Members of the school are turning up petrified and bloody writing are appearing on the walls, revealing to everyone, that someone has opened the chamber of secrets. The attacks continue, bringing the possibility of the closure of Hogwarts. Harry and his friends are now forced to secretly uncover the truth about the chamber before the school closes or any lives are taken.
VS – 1.8 pointed ears
A nicely crafted tale. J.K.Rowling does a good job of introducing the recurrence of Harry’s nemesis. A good hero is only defined by the severity of the villain he faces. Voldemort excuse me He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has it in for Harry. My only gripes with this movie are the obvious more than one year aging of the actors and the entirely circumstantial evidence that seems to implicate Harry.
Forgetting the fact that Harry has an alibi for the first two attacks, the screenwriter and perhaps the author play up the fact the majority of the school believes Harry to be the heir of Slytherin. Had I written the movie I would’ve tried to make the evidence against Harry more than just circumstantial. Harry also shows a marked proclivity to not trust Dumbledore, something that gets him into more trouble in later movies. At least this is a consistent character flaw.
Mrs VS – 1 pointed ear
I would never plug this movie in to watch of my own accord. However, if the family is watching it I don’t need to leave the room. The giant spider is a major exception to that. Younger viewers may find that just a bit scary.
PIT #1 – 2 pointed ears
This movie follows the book very closely. Steve Kloves does an admirable job of translating the novel to the big screen.
PIT #2 – 1.7 pointed ears
This is a watchable movie though not my cup of tea. This is not a high octane stuntfest. My younger brother picks this (and other Harry Potter) movies far too often for my tastes. (VS note: as much as PIT #2 says this movie is not his favorite, he sure quotes a lot of the dialogue)
PIT #3 – 2 pointed ears
I want a flying car. That’s the second largest spider I’ve ever seen.
8.6 pointed ears out of 10 See my reviewof Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for my general feelings regarding the Harry Potter universe. That has not changed. However we did go to see this one in the theater after having seen the first on DVD. Buyable, but I’d recommend owning the whole set as opposed to owning individual titles in this series.
