A man, er rather… cat of few words, Doctor Purreau explains the basics of hatching Pets to the student Wizards of Ravenwood. What can best be described as crude devices, Doctor Purreau’s hatching stations can be costly to operate depending on the pedigree of the Pets involved with the hatching process. Equipped with a clipboard of scribbled notes worthy of a mad scientist bent on Pet hatching, Purreau will occasionally rub his chin as he is immersed in thought, too busy to interact with Wizards after their introductory Quest.

Dr. Moreau is the main antagonist in H. G. Wells’s 1896 science fiction novel The Island of Dr. Moreau. He is a brilliant surgeon forced to relocate to a deserted island when it was discovered that he was performing vivisection (live dissection) upon animals. His ultimate goal was to form animals into human beings.

The Island of Doctor Moreau is an 1896 science fiction novel by English author H. G. Wells (1866–1946). The text of the novel is the narration of Edward Prendick who is a shipwrecked man rescued by a passing boat. He is left on the island home of Doctor Moreau, a mad scientist who creates human-like hybrid beings from animals via vivisection. The novel deals with a number of philosophical themes, including pain and cruelty, moral responsibility, human identity, and human interference with nature. Wells described it as “an exercise in youthful blasphemy.”

I have always loved the pop culture references in Wizard (and Pirate) 101. This series was inspired by a series I did featuring the Heroes of Lemuria and their ties to early 20th Cent. pulp heroes. This is the fourth article chronicling the #W101PopCulture references starting in Wizard City. The current list of all the Wizard City references can be found here. These articles were originally put together for a Facebook group I belong to. Although I am well versed in Pop Culture references but I do not claim to have caught them all. Let me know your favorites in the comments and if I’ve missed one you caught, let me know so I can add it to the list.
