The Krokonomicon is a powerful book of dark magic, said to be able to bring anyone back from the dead. It was written by the Order of the Fang, a group of wizards from Krokotopia. Years later, the book came into the possession of Malistaire Drake, who would use the book in a ritual in the Crown of Fire to attempt to bring his beloved Sylvia back to life.
The Necronomicon, also referred to as the Book of the Dead, or under a purported original Arabic title of Kitab al-Azif, is a fictional grimoire (textbook of magic) appearing in stories by the horror writer H. P. Lovecraft and his followers. It was first mentioned in Lovecraft’s 1924 short story “The Hound”, written in 1922, though its purported author, the “Mad Arab” Abdul Alhazred, had been quoted a year earlier in Lovecraft’s “The Nameless City”. Among other things, the work contains an account of the Old Ones, their history, and the means for summoning them.
Alhazred is the Balance professor in the classroom underneath the Krokosphinx. Alhazred is an old and prominent member of the Order of the Fang.
Abdul Alhazred, or the Mad Arab, is a recurring character in the works of H.P. Lovecraft. He is frequently cited as the author of the fabled Necronomicon, an occult text containing knowledge from beyond the Earth.
This is the twenty-fifth article chronicling the #W101PopCulture references starting in Wizard City and the second for Krokotopia. The current list of all the (known) Krokotopia references can be found here. These articles were originally put together for a Facebook group I belong to. Although I am well versed in Pop Culture references but I do not claim to have caught them all. Let me know your favorites in the comments and if I’ve missed one you caught, let me know so I can add it to the list.
