Ballard, OK Map #6 – A Car Wars Supplement

Map #6 of 12 for Ballard, OK

Lo-res version of Ballard Map #6

30 – Guard Barracks 4 Unit single-story brick structure (7 DP) – 116 Main St.  Before Motel Monte Vista was built, this was the Ballard Inn.  After the Motel was built, few if any Route 66 travelers actually ever ventured into town and the Inn was converted to a four-unit studio apartment complex. When the gang took over Ballard, they turned the apartments into residences for the leader’s (currently Monty) top Lieutenants /personal guard (all single, no kids, does not mean the guards are alone at night).  (DM’s discretion who is inside at any given time.  The guards don’t spend time here, this is where they sleep.  There’s more fun to be had at Maxine’s).

The Blast Cannon In the universal turret on the roof is accessed from a trap door in Apartment 1.  The turreted VMG on the west side of the building is remotely fired via targeting computer in Apartment 4.  A backup set of controls for the drawbridge gates for Monty’s Killer RV are also located in Apartment 1.   The only time you’ll see their bikes parked outside is when the guards are actually in residence.  If the bikes are outside, they are not easy pickings.  Those bikes are each protected by a keypad with 6-digit PIN.  If you try to move the bikes without the proper PIN, BOOM!

31 – Maxine’s Cantina, single story structure (brick and wood; Brick 3’ tall 7 DP, Wood 5 DP) – 115 Main St. Two buildings: the main one has a seating capacity of 42 (though the gang doesn’t pay attention to the limit) and a storage shed out back (4 pts metal armor. On Map #9). Parking is supposedly along the street.  There is truck access to the building’s rear from the alley on Map #9.   The gang doesn’t seem to care where they park and there are usually 6-10 bikes around the building and 2-3 cars. Tourists making the mistake of venturing inside will be plied with alcohol until they are drunk and can be taken by the gang for “Fun and Games”.  Locals (non-residents of Ballard) are welcome but do not eat for free.  If you walk in wearing the colors of a rival gang, you won’t make it in very far.

The Kitchen is in the NE corner of the building The Dining Room, aside from the Bar near the west door of the kitchen, occupies most of the remainder of the building.

When the gang is in town and if an individual is not otherwise engaged in an activity, you can find them at Maxine’s.  Although townspeople and gang members don’t pay at Maxine’s (It’s a complex barter/work exchange economy for the residents of Ballard), prices for outsiders are actually VERY reasonable.  The gang doesn’t kidnap EVERY person who ventures into Ballard.  Local cattlemen and soybean farmers will congregate at Maxine’s, and the occasional visitor will be allowed to leave to spread positive word-of-mouth about Ballard.

Maxine’s has been Maxine’s since it opened.  It has been owned by the same family since 1938 when Route 66 was paved.  They served the first motorists that stopped in town.  When the Marauders took over Ballard, the family agreed to stay and feed the gang members in exchange for protection.  Maxine is an honorific bestowed by the family on the current family matriarch.  The Cantina has passed from mother to daughter for over 100 years.

Like the other civilian residents of Ballard, the De la Cruz family knows not to ask too many questions about the tourists who “disappear”.  The De la Cruzes just have more exposure to the visitors who disappear because of the restaurant.  Conversely, gang members know not to harass any members of the family because they have a direct line to Monty.

32 – Ballard County Sheriff Department (Brick Building 10 DP, Metal Armor 7 pts) – 110 Main St.  When the gang took over Ballard, the Sheriff and Deputies fought back valiantly but to no avail. Those brave souls are now buried in the St. Thomas’ Catholic Church Cemetery (see map #10). With the capture of the department, the gang managed to acquire a fully functioning Law Enforcement Office with all the gear, communication equipment, weapons, and ammo. They also got two squad cars.  Gang members will fight for the “promotion” from gang member to Deputy Sheriff.   The current Sheriff is Herbert (Herbs to his friends) Walker.   A former Green Beret, Herbert has been with the Marauders since the end of the Second Civil War.  His days of marauding are nearing their end.  He fancies himself a modern Buford T. Justice from Smokey and the Bandit.  HIS word is LAW and the only person who can change his mind is Monty himself.  Herbert has eight deputies that rotate between patrolling (looking for easy prey for the gang on 66), guarding “guests”, manning the bunkers, and being off duty.  When the Marauders are in town, Sheriff Herbert and his deputies are more relaxed.  When the gang goes marauding town security is left in the hands of the Sheriff and Deputies.  They take that job VERY seriously

The station itself has 2 holding cells where the gang keeps “lawbreakers”, a squad room, armory, and service area for the vehicles. There is a cinder block building with six cinder block cells (9 DP for each wall) behind the station that the gang uses for more temporary housing of “guests” and “lawbreakers” until it’s time for “fun & games”.  Otherwise, the guests are held in the courthouse basement.  The Marauders have over the course of time fortified the building with steel plate armor, two bunkers in the front (Main St.) of the building are equipped with rocket launchers and auto cannons in universal turrets are on the roof of the station (accessible via stairs to the roof) and holding cells (accessible via ladder on outside of the building directly across the rear west door of the station).

33 – Wick’s Guns, Ammo and Hardware, decrepit store front (3 pts of metal armor over 5 DP) – 108 Main St., access either from alley or from Main St.  This is one of the Marauder’s “legitimate” businesses.  It also serves as the town armory.  Wick’s is not run by any gang members.  The Sanchez family (see #14 on Map #3) “owns” and operates this business.  Similar to the barter/work exchange set-up for food at Maxine’s, locals do not pay for their new guns or ammunition.  Prices for area farmers and cattlemen are fair, but out-of-towners that actually get this far into town (for whatever reason) can expect to pay higher than the going rates.

34 – Casey’s General Store, rundown store front (3 pts of metal armor over 5 DP) – 106 Main St., Another “legitimate” business. Casey’s is for all intents and purposes the town’s dry goods supply and warehouse.  The Vasquez (same family that operates the hotel–sons work here, daughters work the hotel) family operates the store under the same barter/work exchange for residents, comparable rates for locals and a steep surcharge for visitors.  Area farmers and cattlemen find that although the prices are a bit higher than in the Big Cities of New Tulsa and Oklahoma City, it’s cheaper to buy here than it is to attempt the run down I44 or Rt 66 to one of the cities or larger small towns.

This was one of the ubiquitous yellow store discount chain stores (Wal-Mart for towns to small for Wal-Mart to notice) prior to the second civil war.  When Ballard began to shut down, the chain pulled out and left the building, shelves, and some dry goods.  Before the Marauders took over the town, the store was pretty run down and completely picked over by scavengers.  When the Marauders came town, Hambone convinced them that the General Store was a necessity for the remaining residents.

Mary and her crew keep the shelves stocked pretty decently.

35 – Ballard City Hall / County Courthouse (Limestone and Marble 15 DP damage needs to exceed 15 DP before building is affected at all, small arms fire bounces off) – 109 Main St. The building has two stories and a full basement. It is no longer used for its original purpose.  The first floor held county and city offices.  The second floor held the court room and judge’s chambers.  What the gang does with the building is unknown.  There are twelve holding cells in the basement for “visitors”.

The old courthouse has the same defenses as Midville (check Midville Courthouse) but twin lasers are mounted on the roof in universal turrets.  They can be accessed from the stairs inside the building

DMs Notes: see #49 on Map #9 for information on what the basement connects to.

36 – Ballard Fire Department (5 pts metal armor) – 104 Main St. When the original citizens of Ballard were “encouraged” to leave, the Fire Department left with all the equipment they could carry and/or drive out and disabled the rest. Left behind were one ambulance, one pump vehicle, and one antique gas-powered fire truck that the town used to drive around in local parades. It is unknown if the gang has gotten these vehicles working again.

The firetruck bays are each accessed through an overhead door facing east with 15 feet of clearance.  The doors are 4 DP.  If they are open when a firefight breaks out on the property.  They will begin to close at the rate of 1 foot every second.  The door will take 15 turns to completely close.

There is an office located in the SE corner of the building.  Storage to the rear (west wall) and a 7’ tall storage area above the rear storage area

37 – Davis Brother’s 24-Hour Towing and Salvage Yard – 103 Main St. “Guests” and “Lawbreakers” who don’t survive fun and games get to take a dirt nap at St. Timothy’s. Their vehicles end up here. 3 buildings all single story, the office, the shop, and storage. There are so many salvaged vehicles here that the odds are good they have the replacement part you need. Getting the part without you joining the crowd at St. Timothy’s is another thing entirely.  The facility is equipped with large forklift for moving stripped vehicles to a flat bed trailer, all the tools necessary to strip and/or repair vehicles and a state-of-the-art communications rig to monitor channels for broken down vehicles.  DBST owns five tow trucks, two big rig units capable of hauling trucks, buses and RVs and a flatbed unit capable of hauling most 4-6 wheeled cars and small trucks and two standard medium duty converted pickup units.

37-A The office building (5 DP).  Standard normal office building.  Odds are good that during business hours the only one you’ll find in the office is Angela.  Miles, Tim, Everet, and Robin are either out back stripping vehicles or out on a call.

37-B Pull-through parts stripping building (4 pts metal armor).  Each wall east and west has overhead door with 15 feet of clearance.  The doors are 4 DP.  These doors are positioned so the tow truck can enter from Main and drive through to the yard and leave the towed vehicle in the shop.  All usable parts are removed and then the vehicle is moved to the crusher.  If the doors are open when a firefight breaks out on the property.  They will begin to close at the rate of 1 foot every second.  The door will take 15 turns to completely close.

37-C Parts Storage and the back of the lot connecting to the alley is on Map #9

The “Davis Brothers” are nominally members of the gang but with more mechanical than fighting skill.  The brothers and sons spend more time in their tow trucks and stripping vehicles than they do on bikes.  Though Miles and Tim do ride for fun when they can.  They honor the ‘Code of the Brotherhood’ and will dispatch to rescue any brother on Rt. 66 or I-44.  The Marauders do NOT mess with any trucker as they need the good will of the Brotherhood to make sure their oil tankers arrive at the refinery safely.  The Brotherhood in turn does not acknowledge that many rich duelists (and their RVs) ‘rescued’ by the Davis Brothers are never heard from again.

38 – Ballard Post Office (closed) – 102 Main St. Three buildings all single story. Obviously closed but not abandoned. There is the Post Office itself right off Main (38-A Cinder-block Building 10 DP). The Post Master’s house immediately behind it (38-B 5 DP). There is also a Secure Storage Unit to the back of the lot (38-C Cinder-block building 10 DP overlaid with 6 pts of metal armor).  Just to the north west of the storage unit, behind the fire station (on  Map #3) is a 200’ tall communications tower.  The equipment on the tower looks new and well cared for.  What the gang uses the property for is unknown.

DMs Notes:  This is the Marauder’s Tech Depot.  Roy Hefflo – 41 (Tech +3, Computer +3, Driver +1, Cyclist +1, Gunner +1) and his wife Cyndi – 37 (Computer +2, Medic +2, Gunner +2) and 19-year-old daughter Daisy (Gamer +2, Climber +2, Computer +2, Cyclist +1, Gunner +4) live in the old Post Master’s house.  What used to the be the mail sorting room behind the public access area of the Post Office is now Roy’s playground.  Anything tech related for the gang falls under Roy’s purview.  Cyndi, when not helping her husband with tech, can be found assisting Mary Hinkley with medical duties.  Daisy is the town sniper, when the alarm sounds, she can grab her rifle, ammo pack and keys, and be out of the house, across the lawn, up the 150’ ladder, and into her nest in about 30 seconds (she trains).  When she’s not practicing the climb, shooting her rifle, or gaming, Daisy is out and about Ballard riding her crotch rocket bike (minimal armor, no weapons, built for speed) so she can get to her sniper spot if needed.  Daisy is a dead ringer for her namesake Daisy Duke (right down to the short shorts and halter tops).

39 – Ballard Farmer’s Bank (closed) (brick building 8 DP) – 100 Main St. The gang has some lucrative business here in Ballard. Although they do manage a profit from the Stop and Shop and Flea Market, the BIG money comes from the oil well and the salvage of vehicles left by unfortunate guests. The old bank vault (20 pts metal armor) is where they store their legal and ill-gotten gains.  Monty keeps the building locked up tight.  He has the keys to the building and the vault.  It is unknown if there are other copies of the keys.

40 – Ballard’s U-StorIt Storage – 304 Ballard Road. Three buildings surrounded by reinforced concrete (40 DP).  Monty’s second-in-command. Allan Taylor, lives in the single-story home on the property with his girlfriend and kids; (Alan – 37 Cyclist +3, Driver +2, Gunner +2, Trucker; Stacy – 31, Driver +2, Gunner +3, Cyclist, Medic +1; Ian (Alan’s son but not Stacy’s) – 17 is a junior member of the gang, Cyclist +1 Gunner +1, Driver; Malcolm – 15, Cyclist, Gunner, Driver, and Ellie – 13, Gunner, Medic).  The family guards the facility when the Marauders are out Marauding.  The storage unit is reinforced. It may not look like it, but this storage facility is almost as secure as the bank vault.  The whole property is protected by the same type of minefield as the CoOp.

40-A 5-unit storage facility (sandwich armor 8 pts metal over wooden building 5 DP), this is where the gang keeps ‘salvaged’ vehicles too nice to strip for parts that have not yet been “serviced” by the Davis Bros. The building is 11’ tall with 9’ clearance on the doors (8 pts metal armor).  Unless a vehicle is being put inside or taken out, the doors are ALWAYS kept shut and locked.
