Ballard, OK Map #8 – A Car Wars Supplement

Map #8 of 12 for Ballard, OK

42 – Abandoned? Single-story home (5 DP) – 206 Damian’s Way. Detached garage, compacted dirt driveway.

This home is completely abandoned.  No one is inside should anyone attempt to take shelter inside.

43 – Ballard Public Schools – 304 First St.

43-A – This story-and-a-half (sub-basement and elevated foundation) brick structure (15 DP exterior, 6 DP interior walls) was at one time the Ballard K-12 Public School.  In the late 1990s, school districts consolidated and the Junior and Senior High students were either bused (or drove) to the new High School in Bristow, while grades K-6 stayed in town.  The building itself has 5 classrooms, a principal’s office, kitchen, and cafeteria/multipurpose room.  Oklahoma schools were all completely shut down during the Second Civil War.  After the war the Ballard school was never re-opened and what few children that were left in town were bused to a neighboring district.  The town used the building as an ad-hoc community center.  Today, Hambone uses the building for its intended purpose and educates the young members of the community. There is an old Ballard School District School Bus parked out back. Hambone swears he’ll get it back up and running one day.

43-B – When the Bulldogs (old school mascot) still had a baseball team, this was the concession stand for home games.  Now when the “townsfolk” host “fun & games” with out-of-town duelists, Maxine and her family will serve burritos, enchiladas and beer.

43-C – Home of the Ballard Bulldogs, this ball field has seen much better days.  The field is now Ballard’s ad-hoc dueling arena.  The stands are rickety and look like a strong breeze would blow them over.  The field is unlit and there is absolutely no protection for any spectators.  All dueling is considered off road and any maneuvers are at an additional D1.  The infield is dirt, and the outfield is NOT lush grass.  Dirt clouds are kicked up “behind” the direction of travel (same rules as a smoke cloud).  Visibility is an issue in this “arena.”

Off road rules:
Vehicles without off-road suspension, motorcycle -2 HC, trike -1 HC, car 4 or 6 wheel -3 HC, oversized -2 HC.
Every turn a vehicle without off road suspension is off road above 10 MPH it rolls 1 die,
on a 2 or 3 the underbody takes 1 pt damage.
on 4 or 5, 1 tire (random) takes 1 pt damage,
No damage taken on 1, both tires and underbody take damage on 6
over 50 mph roll twice a turn,
if the underbody is destroyed or there was none to begin with, 1/2 dice of damage to a random interior component is taken.  Tires will still take damage until they are gone.)

Be forewarned, the Marauders do not play fair.  Most, if not all, of their vehicles have off-road suspension.  Odds are stacked in their favor for whatever duel the unfortunate visitor may be forced to participate in.  Spectators have been known to take pot shots at “guests” from the stands or even from parked vehicles in the lot next to #24.  Do not be surprised if one of the spectators decides to join the duel late.

That said, three current Marauders are former guests who survived “fun and games”.  Survive and you might just find yourself part of the gang.

43-D – (2 DP) a ramshackle bus stop built to shelter children waiting for the bus.  It’s more of obstacle than a building at this point.

Garage for #29 (5 DP) 121 Main St.

44 –– Detached Duplex but shares the same address.  Single Story (Unit A 6 DP and Unit B 6 DP). 301 First St.  Probably the nicest homes in Ballard, “Maxine,” a 60-something widow and her  three youngest children live in Unit A (Margaret “Maxine” De la Cruz; Driver, Cooking +3, Hospitality +3, Mixologist +3; Jesus De la Cruz – 27; Driver +1, Gunner +1, Cooking +3, Mixologist +2; Miguel De la Cruz – 24; Driver +1, Gunner +1, Mixologist +3, Cooking +2, Temperance De la Cruz – 22; Driver, Gunner +2, Mixologist +3, Hospitality +2.  Maxine’s oldest daughter Marie and her husband and kids live in Unit B (Marie Gonzales – 30; Driver, Gunner, Cooking +3, Mixologist +3, Hospitality +3; Esteban Gonzales – 32; Trucker +3, Driver +2, Gunner +2, Cyclist +1, Pedro Gonzales – 10; Jorge Gonzales – 8; and Margaret “Meg” Gonzales – 5) Pedro, Jorge, and Meg can be found riding their bikes around town (bikes move at 10 mph and have 2 HP)

Maxine was known as Meg when she was growing up.  She fell in love with and married trucker Pedro De la Cruz in her early 20s.  Pedro was killed by a renegade gang shortly after Temperance was born.  Meg lost her mother the next year and has been the current “Maxine” ever since.  Her daughter Marie is next in line to inherit the restaurant.  All four of Maxine’s kids (Marie, Jesus, Miguel, and Temperance) work in the Restaurant feeding the gang, town folk and the visitors.  Marie’s husband Esteban is one of Mary’s crew.

The larger unit has an attached garage.  Both homes are in good repair.  What grass is growing is kept neatly trimmed by the livestock (sheep and chickens) on the property.  There are children’s toys (bikes and such) on the yard and would be considered obstacles.  Make no mistake.  ANY dueling near the property or stray weapons fire that strikes the house will be met with deadly force.  Every Marauder in the Cantina and flophouses will empty out and begin firing on whoever dared to shoot at Maxine and her kids.

The family vehicles (2 pickups, 2 sedans, 1 sporty mid-size and Esteban’s Escort vehicle) are parked on the alley access outside of the fence. Only Esteban’s Escort is duel ready. the remainder are armored/defensive vehicles. The De la Cruz’s are restaurateurs, not duelists and know they have nothing to fear from the Marauders.

The back yard is enclosed by a 10-foot-tall wooden fence (5 DP).   This is the chicken coop.  There are enough chickens to provide plenty of eggs.  The sheep free range graze in the available grass on Maps #5 #6 #8 and #9 (Basically the area surrounded by First Street, Main Street, Damian’s Way and Ballard Road.  The sheep are kept in this non-fenced area by two very well-trained Border Collies. If a visitor to town kills a sheep for any reason expect repercussions.

Chicken Movement Rules – Unless frightened, chickens will remain relatively motionless. They may move about randomly (One 1/4″ square per turn) from time to time but without outside stimuli, the chickens are content to sit or scratch for bugs. If a loud noise goes off the chickens will move en masse as a flock. They have a top speed of 10 MPH but can change directions at will. Chickens will ALWAYS run away from perceived danger.

Targeting an individual chicken as at -6 due to their size and ability to change directions. If a chicken takes more than 2 DP it’s a bloody smear.

WARNING – Targeting a chicken in Ballard is a sure fire to bring the wrath of the townsfolk AND Marauders down on you.

Sheep Movement Rules Unless frightened sheep will remain motionless content to graze. If startled they will run away from perceived danger unless herded by the collies. Sheep have a top speed of 25 MPH and can change directions at will. Sheep will run in a herd away from danger AND in the direction they are being herded.

Targeting an individual sheep is at a -2. Sheep have 3 DP. 1 point will incapacitate it. 2 points will kill it. 3 or more points of damage and you have a smear fit only for crows.

WARNING – Targeting (targeting mind you, you don’t even need to fire) a sheep in Ballard is a sure fire to bring the wrath of the townsfolk AND Marauders down on you.

Collie Movement Rules These dogs are WELL trained. Unless there is a perceived danger to the sheep the dogs will sit or lay still conserving their energy for when they need. The dogs know the townsfolk and the sounds of expected vehicles. Unknown people and vehicles will put the dogs on alert. At the first sign of perceived threat the dogs will begin to move the sheep away at 10 MPH. If a duel breaks out near the sheep the dogs herd at top speed AWAY from the battle. If you are an unknown person on foot (highly unlikely in Ballard), one dog will herd the flock away and the other runs in for attack. The Collie runs at a top speed of 30 MPH in a serpentine attack pattern to avoid gunfire. If the dog is within one space of the attacker it will attack. Dogs do 2 points of damage per turn flesh and body armor. 1 point of damage per turn to Improved Body Armor.

Targeting a dog is at a -2. Dogs have 3 DP. 1 point will incapacitate it. 2 points will kill it. 3 or more points of damage and you have a smear.

WARNING – Do I need to say it? The residents of Ballard are VERY protective of their animals. Seriously, you have a better chance of surviving Fun & Games than you do surviving an attack on their animals.

45 – Occupied Two-story home (5 DP) – 112 Damian’s Way.  Attached single-story garage and concrete driveway.  The Davis family;  Miles Davis (Trucker +2, Driver +2, Gunner +1 Mech +2) his wife Angela (Driver +1, Gunner +3) Teenaged sons Everet 19 (Driver, Gunner, Trucker, Mech) & Robin 17 (Driver, Gunner, Trucker, Mech) and Miles’ bachelor brother Tim (Trucker +3, Gunner +2, Driver, Mech +2), of Davis Brothers Towing and Salvage,  live here. Miles and Tim drive the pick-up tow units like they were their personal vehicles. Angela drives the family mini van, Everet and Robin each have a nice sporty mid-size they’ve managed to talk Dad out of from the “scrapped” vehicles.
