It was an interesting opening. 20th Century Fox was afraid the movie would be a box office disaster and demanded theaters show the film if they wanted to screen the highly anticipated “The Other Side of Midnight”
Star Wars earned $1.5 million at those 32 theaters compared to Smokey & the Bandit’s $1.6 million at 300+ theaters and The Other Side of Midnight opened to $2.2 million in 400+ theaters two weeks later.
The Other Side of Midnight tanked at the box office.
