It’s the Fleet Insignia
During the original series airing, each starship and starbase had their own unique isignia. With the advent of the Star Trek the Motion Picture the Enterprise’s insignia had been adopted as the insignia for all of Starfleet.
With the airing of Discovery we have seen the Enterprise’s insignia used on various starships. I don’t buy the “Everything has been altered because of ‘Temporal Incursions’ theory.” So we’ll assume that the insignia is not unique to the Enterprise but rather the fleet within Starfleet that she is assigned to.
Also, I’ve been getting a LOT of comments over at the Nitpicker’s Facebook page about “Each Starship had it’s OWN insignia prior to TMP PERIOD”. To rebut that argument I offer this screencap from “Court Martial” TOS S1 Ep20.
Well, I see our graduating class from the Academy is well represented. Corrigan. Teller. How you doing, Mike?
These men ARE friends of Kirk’s and NOT part of his command. At least Kirk isn’t on a first name basis with any other member of his crew and they are certainly not behaving like they are under his command. The Intrepid is in dock at the Starbase during this episode. So we have evidence from TOS that other ships within the fleet have the same insignia as the Enterprise.
