Thank you to Brenda J. G. for finding this one.
Milos Bookwyrm is the Librarian of Dragonspyre, as such he is one of the first characters your wizard meets in Dragonspyre. He is also the focal point for the storyline quests in the outer ring of the city.
Milos’ name is a play on the word “bookworm”. According to Merriam-Webster a bookworm is “a person unusually devoted to reading and study”; a good name for a librarian. “Wyrm” – a huge limbless and wingless dragon or dragon-like creature. “Bookwyrm” – A Dragon who enjoys reading and books.
Brenda has found two possibilities for this reference; the first is tenuous.
Milos is a character from the Ravenloft (Ravenloft is a horror setting for D&D) novel “I, Strahd: The War Against Azalin”. Milos stole the presumed diary of Strahd Von Zarovich and attempted to sell it to Mrs. Heywood. She held it for the day and read it to ensure its authenticity. However, one night came, a vampire minion (presumably Strahd’s) entered Mrs. Heywood’s Bookshop to retrieve the book and apprehend the thief. Milos surrendered the book but retreated. The vampire fiendishly thanked the horrified Mrs. Heywood for delaying the thief and promised Milos would be tracked down and fed upon.
The second possibility is in my opinion the more likely of the two.
Miloš Mikeln (May 23, 1930 – April 1, 2014) was a Slovene writer, playwright, theatre director and journalist. He served as the president of Slovene PEN (PEN originally stood for “Poets, Essayists, Novelists”, but now stands for “Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists, Novelists” and includes writers of any form of literature, such as journalists and historians.) and was the initiator of the Writers for Peace Committee, founded in 1984. He was the Committee chairman for the first decade of its existence.
The current list of all the (known) Dragonspyre references are located here.
Although I am well versed in Pop Culture references but I do not claim to have caught them all. Let me know your favorites in the comments and if I’ve missed one you caught, let me know so I can add it to the list.
