Medulla

Thank you to Melissa I. for this one.

Medulla is the final Boss in the first half of Empyrea. Your wizard must defeat him to recover their mind-controlled friend; Pork, Sparck, and Beanz, and then rescue Mellori.

Medulla: “Oh, hello, Bat. Wizard. Surprised to see me? I know you thought I’d be running around investigating your sabotage, but I’m too smart for that.”
Bat: “Perhaps. Or did we want you to think we thought that, knowing you’d overthink things, thus playing right into our hand?”
Medulla: “No! It’s what I said! It’s my hand that’s been played into! I have you right where I want you. Prepare to bear witness to my genius!”
Bat: “Your genius? All I see is a workshop of stolen ideas. MY ideas. But what I don’t see are any of your minions. Oh no! Did they desert you?”
Medulla: “Meh. I’ve got new mini-“
Mellori: “Wizard… Run! Stop yammering and just go!”
Medulla: “SHUSH! Save your strength, Mellori. I’m going to need it. Hehehe. Now where was I? Oh, yes… …Meh. I’ve got new minions now. Isn’t that right, Crew? Ahehehehehe!”
Mind-Meddled Crew: “Yes, Master Medulla. We live to serve you. You are the smartest and toughest and most handsome boss that ever lived.”
Bat: “You mind-meddling monster! This ends now!”
Medulla: “Ah, I love it when a plan comes together. Sorry yours didn’t work out, Wizard. I mean, I’m not sorry. Obviously. Whatever. Let’s just fight!”

Krang

Krang (also spelled Kraang) is a supervillain appearing in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-related media, most frequently in the 1987 animated series and its associated merchandise, such as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures comic book and many TMNT video games. The character has endured as one of the franchise’s most prominent antagonists and a major foe of the Ninja Turtles.

Krang’s first comics appearance was in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures vol. 1, #1, published by Archie Comics in August 1988. In the 1987 TV series, Krang was voiced by Pat Fraley. He also appeared as General Krang in the 2012 IDW comic publication. Krang made his first live action appearance in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which was a sequel to the 2014 film, with his voice provided by Brad Garrett.

In the final season of the 1987 animated series, Krang showed signs of psychic powers when he hypnotized one of Lord Dregg’s soldiers into obeying his and Shredder’s commands, saying it would only work on weak-willed people.

Illustration of the Medulla oblongata

The medulla oblongata or simply medulla is a long stem-like structure which makes up the lower part of the brainstem. It is anterior and partially inferior to the cerebellum. It is a cone-shaped neuronal mass responsible for autonomic (involuntary) functions, ranging from vomiting to sneezing. The medulla contains the cardiac, respiratory, vomiting and vasomotor centers, and therefore deals with the autonomic functions of breathing, heart rate and blood pressure as well as the sleep–wake cycle.

The current list of all the (known) Empyrea references can be found here.

Although I am well versed in Pop Culture references but I do not claim to have caught them all. Let me know your favorites in the comments and if I’ve missed one you caught, let me know so I can add it to the list.
