There is much that bothers me about the Episode II sequence. Threepio’s head seems to come off his body quite easily. Artoo is able to pop the head off quite easily at the end of the battle and Threepio’s head is knocked off with little effort in the droid factory.
The body continues to be ambulatory after Threepio’s head is removed so the body has some autonomy. But why can’t Threepio fully control the Battle Droid’s body? Does droid programming exist in the head AND the body and Threepio’s head programming isn’t sufficiently advanced enough to control the body and begins to behave in battle droid fashion (“Die, Jedi Die”)
Whatever the explanation it is quite clear that by the time of The Empire Strikes Back, Threepio’s separate head power source has gone bad. He now needs his head attached to his torso to function properly.
