The Lemonheads are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston in 1986 by Evan Dando, Ben Deily, and Jesse Peretz. Dando has remained the band’s only constant member. After their initial punk-influenced releases and tours as an independent/college rock band in the late 1980s, the Lemonheads’ popularity with a mass audience grew in 1992 with the major label album It’s a Shame about Ray, which was produced, engineered, and mixed by The Robb Brothers (Bruce Robb, Dee, and Joe). This was followed by a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson”, which eventually became one of the band’s most successful singles. The Lemonheads were active until 1997 before going on hiatus, but reformed with a new lineup in 2005 and released The Lemonheads the following year. The band released its latest album, Varshons 2, in February 2019.
A cover of “Mrs. Robinson” (recorded to promote the video release and the 25th anniversary of The Graduate) was released as a single and got them the most exposure they had had so far. This cover was also used in the film Wayne’s World 2 and in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street. When the Ray album was reissued, the track was tacked on to the end. The band enjoyed some success on college radio as well as mainstream exposure. The title track, “It’s a Shame About Ray”, also saw commercial success.

“Coo coo ka choo Mrs. Robinson” is a nonsensical phrase from the Simon & Garfunkel song “Mrs. Robinson,” which is often interpreted as a playful, almost mocking reference to the character “Mrs. Robinson” from the movie “The Graduate,” and the “coo coo ka choo” part is likely a nod to a similar sound in the Beatles song “I Am the Walrus.”. The phrase ‘Goo goo g’joob’ was first used in the 1967 Beatles song “I Am the Walrus”. ‘Coo coo ka choo’ was used in Simon and Garfunkel’s 1968 song “Mrs. Robinson”. The phrase was used in the 60s and 70s as a way of saying ‘all good’ or ‘everything is okay’. It was also said by the character Crush in Finding Nemo, and in That 70’s Show by a stoned character. It’s pretty common in hippy culture.
Musically, the band has been classified as alternative rock, grunge, jangle pop, power pop, and pop-punk.
Lemonhead is an American brand of candy that was first introduced in 1962, produced by the Ferrara Candy Company. Lemonheads are a round, lemon-flavored candy consisting of a sweet coating, soft sour shell, and a hard candy core. Other popular flavors are Grapeheads, Cherryheads and Appleheads.
Inspiration for the Lemonhead name came from Salvatore Ferrara seeing his grandson, Salvatore II, the third generation, after delivery. Salvatore II was a forceps baby and he noted that his new grandson’s head was lemon-shaped. The candy was born out of the same cold panned process as the company’s Red Hots in 1962. In this process, layer after layer of sugar and flavors are added until the candy reaches the desired shape and size. They are most commonly sold in their standard 1 centimeter size, but they are also produced in a single-sale 3 cm version. Lemonhead candies are gluten and fat-free. Ferrara now makes 500 million Lemonheads per year.
