Nitpicking Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan – Distraught Scotty

Nitpicking Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan
Scotty the Distraught Uncle

After Khan’s surprise attack on the Enterprise, the ship suffers crippling damage. Peter Preston stays at his post while the other trainees run for their lives and pays the ultimate price. Scotty brings the critically wounded cadet to the bridge to show the Captain what Khan’s attack has cost. After Saavik has her emotional outburst, Kirk and Scotty bring the cadet to Sickbay where the young man, clinging to life, has one last word for Captain Kirk. He breathes his last after leaving a bloody imprint on Kirk’s uniform and McCoy declares him dead.

I’ve had a problem with this scene since 1982. If Peter stayed at his post in Engineering on Deck 15 and was gravely injured, WHY did Scotty carry him via turbolift ALL the way to the bridge on Deck 1, bypassing Sickbay on Deck 7. Fourteen extra decks travel time plus the additional “shock factor” time on the bridge shaved minutes off the time that Doctor McCoy could’ve used to save Peter’s life.

I’ll forgive the fact that Scotty carried him out of Engineering as transporters could’ve been down to the attack. So we’re left with either the Distraught Uncle not realizing where he was going. Or it’s an Angry Uncle wanting the Captain to see what his hubris has wrought. Either way, Scotty blew it.
