Katarra is a resident of Catmandu, a reclusive region in the outer reaches of MooShu. Her house was set ablaze by the Golden Horde after they raided Catmandu in search of String Caster Fuzhi, leader of the Order of the Sacred Yarn, so they could reach the Stone of Heaven. Soon after, the Wizard arrived to Katarra’s house and put out the fire, saving her.
Avatar: The Last Airbender, also known as Avatar: The Legend of Aang in some regions, is an American animated fantasy action television series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko and produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio.
Avatar is set in a largely Asian-inspired world in which some people can telekinetically manipulate one of the four elements—water, earth, fire or air—through practices known as “bending”, inspired by Chinese martial arts. The only individual who can bend all four elements, the “Avatar”, is responsible for maintaining harmony among the world’s four nations, and serves as the link between the physical world and the spirit world. The series follows the journey of twelve-year-old Aang, the current Avatar and last survivor of his nation, the Air Nomads, along with his friends Katara, Sokka, and Toph, as they strive to end the Fire Nation’s war against the other nations and defeat Fire Lord Ozai before he conquers the world. The series also follows Zuko—the exiled prince of the Fire Nation, seeking to restore his lost honor by capturing Aang, accompanied by his uncle Iroh—and later, his sister Azula. Avatar is presented in a style that combines anime with American cartoons and relies on the imagery of primarily Chinese culture, with various other influences from different East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, North Asian, and Native American cultures.
Katara is a fictional character in the Nickelodeon animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel series The Legend of Korra. The character, created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, is voiced by Mae Whitman in the original series and Eva Marie Saint in the sequel series, The Legend of Korra. She is Chief Hakoda and Kya’s daughter and Sokka’s younger sister. In the 2010 live action film adaptation, she was played by Nicola Peltz, while in the live-action television series adaptation, she is portrayed by Kiawentiio.
Katara is first introduced as a 14-year-old “waterbender”, meaning that she has the ability to control water, ice and blood (also known as bloodbending). At the beginning of the story, she is the only person with such abilities in the Southern Water Tribe, one of two known communities in which waterbending is practiced. She and her older brother, Sokka, discover an “airbender” (one who can manipulate air) named Aang frozen in an iceberg. They free him and accompany him on his quest to defeat the imperialistic Fire Nation and bring peace to the war-torn world.
Katara’s history is marked by loss and the temptation of vengeance; she once stood before the man who killed her mother, with the power to end his life, yet she chose mercy, a choice speaks volumes of strength of her character. She is recognized as the greatest waterbender of her generation, earning the title of Master Waterbender from Master Pakku of the Northern Water Tribe. In her adulthood, Katara married Aang and they had three children: Tenzin, Kya, and Bumi. In The Legend of Korra, Katara is a high-ranking member of the White Lotus and one of the last surviving members of Team Avatar; being personally chosen by Korra as her waterbending teacher.
