Hubris – noun
hu·​bris ˈhyü-brəs : exaggerated pride or self-confidence.

If you can control something, you don’t need external means of keeping something under control. Especially if those external means are potentially lethal and dangerous to your own well-being. Unless of course you have an exaggerated pride in your ability to deal with the danger.
