Prior to E.T.’s rescue ship taking off there is no wind blowing or dust being kicked up. Once the ship takes off, those assembled to witness E.T.’s departure are treated to the expected wind and dust of a ship leaving, all well and good.
However, as the ship departs it takes off through the trees without disturbing the trees while still kicking up wind and dust on the ground even as the ship reaches escape velocity and leaves Earth.
