Monologuing, it’s cliche`. It’s bad when the only reason for the villain or antagonist’s monologue is there for the hero to have time to fix and solve the problem.
The Son’a seem to have have an auto-monologuing feature built into their timers. After Picard and his crew transport Ru’afo and company off their ship and onto the holoship, Picard manages to stop the harvester with six seconds left to go.
It was really fortunate for Picard and the Baku that Ru’afo didn’t just restart the timer but instead engaged the Dramatic Timer Reset with auto-monologuing time added.
When Ru’afo realizes what’s happened he transports over to the collector. This is where the Son’a’s auto-monologuing feature comes in. Ru’afo has to restart the time but instead of resuming from the six second mark, the time resets to nearly three minutes. The OS was programmed to give someone the necessary time to explain WHY the timer had to be restarted. Fortunately, this additional time also allowed Picard to figure out how to set the self-destruct.
