R5-D4 is Faking It
According to the Star Wars radio drama, R2-D2 sabotaged R5. But why? How would R2 know beforehand that Uncle Owen would pick R5 instead of him? According to Star Wars CCG R5 intentionally blew his own motivator so R2 could make his escape to find Obi-Wan. Neither of these is considered canon by Nitpicker standards.
My personal theory is that R5 heroically sacrificed himself after having an off-screen discussion with R2 about his mission for the Rebel Alliance. The other theory is that R5 didn’t want to work on a moisture farm.
