Brother Ray

Brother Ray is a recruiter for the Covenant of Ra. He asks your Wizard for some help posting recruitment posters around Selenopolis. According to Guard Layla, the Covenant of Ra is the biggest criminal organization in Selenopolis. She tasks you with finding their secret base of operations.

Brother Ray was a veteran of the War of the Ninepenny Kings and a former soldier who reformed himself and served the Faith of the Seven.

Ray had at least two brothers, Willam and Owen; they were recruited by a local lord to fight in the War of the Ninepenny Kings. He became a man-at-arms who would do whatever he was told. His friends believed he was not afraid of anything, but he admits he was only brave because he was worried people would see him for what he truly was: “a coward who followed orders”. He burned down villages, stole crops, and killed anyone he was told to. He once cut the throat of a young boy as the mother held back and screamed. That night, he could not forget the mother’s screams, and became ashamed of what he was. After that, he became a man of peace, and an ordained septon.

Brother Ray and some members of his “flock”

Ray discovered the Hound, in the Vale, apparently dead. He had a broken leg, and was covered in bugs. When Ray tried to bury him, the Hound coughed, so Ray loaded him onto a wagon and took him to be nursed back to health. According to Ray, the Hound appeared to die a dozen more times while he was helping him to recover from his near death experience, but always survived. Eventually, the Hound became healthy enough to help Ray and his “flock” in the construction of what appears to be a small sept.

The inhabitants of Cheron were a humanoid species distinguished by half of their skin being white in color, and the other half being black. (Star Trek: “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield”; Star Trek: Section 31) By the 23rd century, the majority of the species was destroyed in a civil war caused by racism. Inhabitants of this planet had a distinctive physical appearance: their skin was exactly half-black and half-white in color, with some white on the right side and black on the left, and others the opposite.

Those who were “black on the right side” considered those “white on the right side” to be inferior, and had organized a “Commission on Political Traitors” as an agency of the government of which they had acquired control. They subjugated their brethren in what they thought was a gesture of mercy and compassion, but the “whites on the right side” considered it nothing but slavery and oppression.

“Let That Be Your Last Battlefield” is the fifteenth episode of the third season of the original American science fiction television show Star Trek. Written by Oliver Crawford (based on a story by Gene L. Coon, writing under his pen name “Lee Cronin”) and directed by Jud Taylor, it was first broadcast January 10, 1969.

In the episode, the Enterprise encounters two survivors of a war-torn planet, each half black and half white (though on opposite sides from each other), each committed to destroying the other.

The episode guest-stars Lou Antonio as Lokai and Frank Gorshin as Commissioner Bele.
