Nitpicking Star Trek – Every Shuttle Down for Repairs

Phil actually covered this one in the Guide for Classic Trekkers. However that was back in ’94. Phil speculated at the time that the shuttle craft hadn’t yet been invented. Which in the reality of the show’s production they hadn’t. AMT funded the construction of the miniature and full-scale mock up in season 2.

The “reel-ity” is that of course the shuttlecraft had been invented by 2266 as evidenced by the Shuttle Pod of Archer’s time and the Stammets class shuttles of Pike’s time.

So why didn’t Kirk send a shuttle down to the surface to rescue the landing party? Either Scotty’s engineering department was WAAAY behind on shuttle maintenance and the entire compliment on board were down for repairs, or Starfleet had removed all the Stammets class shuttlecraft and had not yet replaced them with the brand new Class F shuttles. Either way none were available to rescue Sulu and the landing party.
