Nitpicking Star Trek the Motion Picture – Starfleet’s OSHA Standards

Nitpicking Star Trek the Motion Picture
Starfleet’s OSHA Standards

The primary goal of the Nitpicker’s Guild is not to point out mistakes but to offer explanations for “Why what we see on the screen isn’t really a mistake”.

This one has been sitting on my pile waiting for me to come up with a plausible (and humorous) reason why Spock’s visor isn’t showing a reflection. The reality of the shot is the SFX of V’Ger’s Machine Planet was skillfully added (pre-CGI) to Spock’s helmet without being flopped. An oversight in the SFX technician’s part.

I can’t say that I’m excessively happy with the explanation I came up with. I’m opening it to members of the Guild. Can YOU come up with a better explanation for why the image in Spock’s helmet isn’t reflecting?

I challenged and the Guild responded.

Hey, have you seen how good Starfleet CCTV is? Dramatic zooms, alternating wide shots and close-ups, aesthetically pleasant two-shots… it’s no wonder an organization that can do that with security camera footage can do amazing things with helmet reflections, too! 🙂
