Base Properties:

  • Ammunition, Heavy, Loading, Range, Two-Handed, Push
  • Vicious Foundation. Functions as a Vicious Heavy Crossbow: on a critical hit, the target takes an extra 7 damage of the weapon’s type.
  • Auto-Loading. The crossbow magically reloads itself. It ignores the loading property.
  • Bound Ammunition. If you have no bolts available, the crossbow creates its own spectral ammunition. These vanish after use.
  • Favored Nemesis (Undead). You have advantage on attack rolls made with this weapon against undead.

Level 5–8 (Uncommon Tier):

  • Additional +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls.
  • Critical hits against undead deal an additional 2d8 radiant damage.

Level 9–12 (Rare Tier):

  • Bonus increases by +2.
  • Radiant Brand. Once per short rest, as a bonus action, in addition to Hunter’s Mark, you can brand an undead you can see. For 1 minute, your attacks with this crossbow against that target deal an additional 1d8 radiant damage.
  • Undead hit by this crossbow can’t regain hit points until the start of your next turn.

Level 13–16 (Very Rare Tier):

  • Bonus increases by +1.
  • Piercing Volley. Once per long rest, you fire a radiant-infused bolt that bursts into shards of light. Each creature in a 30-foot line (5 feet wide) must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = 8 + proficiency + Dex modifier). On a failure, they take 6d8 radiant damage (half on success). Undead have disadvantage on this save.

Level 17+ (Legendary Tier):

  • Bonus increases by +1.
  • Relentless Hunt. When you reduce an undead creature to 0 hit points with this crossbow, you may make an immediate extra attack against another creature within range.
  • Pierce the Veil. Bolts fired from this weapon deal radiant damage instead of piercing if you choose. They also ignore resistance and immunity to nonmagical or necrotic damage.

Appearance

The stock is carved with celestial runes that glow faintly when undead are near. When fired at such creatures, the quarrels burn with white-gold fire. Rangers who wield it often describe hearing the faint sound of a hunting horn just before striking true.
