Ye Olde Shoppe of Magicks – The Shoppe

Ye Olde Shoppe of Magicks,

Interdimensional Lair of Nevets the Alien Wizard

Nevets, the Alien Wizard, Proprietor
A magical shoppe for your game.

Greetings, allow me to introduce myself. I am Nevets, proprietor of Ye Olde Shoppe of Magicks. Recently a friend of mine asked if I would make an appearance in his game.

But what good is it for me to appear without my shop? Here’s everything you need to know about Ye Olde Shoppe of Magicks.

Appearance & Entrance

The Shoppe of Magicks never looks quite the same twice. Its door might be a creaky wooden storefront on a cobblestone lane, a shimmering archway in the hollow of an ancient tree, or a glowing doorway carved into the wall of a cave. Whatever its form, subtle alien motifs—glowing runes, strange geometry, or faint humming vibrations—betray its otherworldly nature.

To common folk, the shop might seem like a quaint curiosity or exotic bazaar that “just showed up one day.” To adventurers attuned to the arcane, it hums with unsettling psionic energy.

Interior

Inside, the Shoppe feels larger than the exterior should allow. The walls are lined with shelves of books, alien trinkets, and magical oddities that shift slightly when not observed. Floating lanterns of green light drift lazily overhead. The air carries the faint smell of ozone, parchment, and something sweetly floral.

The central counter is an alien alloy slab covered in glowing sigils, behind which the Alien Wizard observes, scribbles notes, or tinkers with strange experiments. Gravity and space inside may warp subtly — objects hover, distances stretch or shrink, and voices sometimes echo with a delay.

Lair Actions (when encountered here)

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Alien Wizard can invoke the Shoppe’s interdimensional nature to take one of the following effects:

  • Shifting Aisles. Bookshelves and racks of goods reconfigure suddenly. Each creature of the wizard’s choice within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or be pushed up to 15 feet in a random direction.
  • Warped Reality. The wizard bends space. A 20-foot cube within 60 feet becomes distorted. For 1 round, creatures inside are treated as if under the confusion spell.
  • Manifest Curiosity. The shop itself probes intruders’ minds. One creature within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or take 10 (3d6) psychic damage and be unable to attack the Alien Wizard until the end of its next turn.
  • Nevet’s Temporal Curiosity, Shoppe of Magicks Variant: Temporal Reverie
When used within the Shoppe of Magicks, this ability becomes vastly amplified by the unstable dimensional fabric of the place.
    • Effect (enhanced):
    • Duration extends to two full rounds of subjective time.
    • The Alien Wizard can now cast one non-damaging spell that targets only himself or objects (e.g., Detect Magic, Identify, Mage Hand, Teleport, Mending, etc.).
    • The Shoppe subtly self-corrects after the effect ends: items float back to near their original places, but not quite — a few inches off, or upside-down, as if reality forgot exactly how it was.

Narrative Flavor:
Customers and adventurers exiting the Shoppe sometimes swear they saw the wizard in two places at once — or heard their own voices echo a second time.
Reality hiccups politely around him.

Regional Effects

  • While the Shoppe remains manifested in a location, the surrounding area may experience subtle anomalies:
  • Time seems to run slightly slower or faster than normal.
  • Locals recall the shop existing for “as long as they can remember,” though no two agree on when it appeared.
  • Faint glowing “advertisement” runes sometimes appear on stones, trees, or walls within 1 mile.
  • When the Shoppe vanishes, these effects fade within 24 hours.

Encounters at the Shoppe of Magicks
d8 Encounter
1 The Curious Proprietor. The Alien Wizard greets the party warmly, offering tea made from an alien plant that changes color (and taste) each time it’s sipped. He asks dozens of questions about their weapons, pets, and favorite songs.
2 Out of Order. The door is locked and glowing faintly. A note on the front (in alien runes) simply says, “Back in five minutes.” If the party waits, the door opens to a fully active shop. If they force it, they may tumble into an unstable pocket dimension.
3 Mystical Sale Day. Inside, items float with glowing price tags, some written in Common, some in incomprehensible alien script. A random adventurer is offered a powerful item for free, but only if they can answer a riddle about themselves that the wizard somehow already knows.
4 The Misfiled Outhouse. The party opens what looks like a latrine door, only to step directly into the glittering aisles of the Shoppe. The Alien Wizard is visibly embarrassed, muttering, “Interdimensional anchoring error.”
5 Borrowed Inventory. Several mundane villagers (or goblins, bandits, etc.) are browsing inside as though the shop is just another market stall. None of them seem to notice the odd geometry or floating wares, treating it as perfectly normal.
6 Living Merchandise. One of the alien trinkets (perhaps a glowing orb, tiny construct, or singing tome) leaps from the shelf and tries to escape into the Material Plane. The wizard demands the party catch it—offering discounts if they succeed, curses if they don’t.
7 Scholar’s Duel. The Alien Wizard challenges one of the party members to a contest of knowledge. He’ll ask bizarre questions about astronomy, philosophy, or even their own past adventures. Success earns a minor magical item; failure earns his quiet but slightly unnerving laughter.
8 Shifting Exits. When the party tries to leave, the door opens not where they entered, but in a completely different location—possibly leagues away, or even in another plane. The wizard insists this was “part of the bargain” and waves them cheerfully out.
