Nitpicking Star Trek: TNG – We’re All Astronauts on Some Kind of…

Nitpicking Stat Trek the Next Generation
“Identity Crisis” S4 Ep 18
We’re All Astronauts on Some Kind of…

Following exposure to the Tarchannen III transformation virus, Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge began displaying early behavioral anomalies long before the physical metamorphosis. Among these was what medical personnel later classified as a “Narrative Reality Dissociation Episode.”

During this episode, Geordi became convinced that the Enterprise—and indeed, all of Starfleet—was part of an ongoing dramatic visual chronicle called “Star Trek The Next Generation.” He claimed “viewers” were watching their missions, that “music” sometimes played in the background of tense moments, and that he could “improve production values” by enhancing visual displays.

As part of this fixation, La Forge inserted a stylized insignia titled “Star Trek: The Next Generation” into several LCARS display subroutines, particularly in Main Engineering. He insisted this “would help the audience know what show they were watching.”

Note: this nit has been fixed in the remastered version of TNG.
