TRAITS
Toxic Velvet Carapace. Any creature that touches the queen or hits her with a melee attack within 5 feet must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take 9 (2d8) poison damage and become poisoned until the end of its next turn.
Pheromone Sovereign. Commands 1d4 Velvet Uch Ant Swarms to start.
Uch Ant Swarms within 120 feet of the queen:
- Gain advantage on attack rolls
- Deal +2 poison damage
- Make their saving throws with advantage
- Automatically detect creatures damaged by the queen
- If a swarm would be reduced to 0 HP, it instead remains at 1 HP until after the queen takes her next turn.
Hive Mind Instinct. The queen always knows the location of every Uch Ant or Uch Ant Swarm within 300 feet.
Earth-Burrower. The queen can burrow through soil, loose stone, rotted wood, or walls weakened by her brood. This movement does not disturb the material she passes through.
ACTIONS
Multiattack. The queen makes two attacks: one with her Toxic Bite and one with her Velvet Lash.
Toxic Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 12 (2d8 + 3) piercing damage plus 14 (4d6) poison damage.
The target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute. The target may repeat the save at the end of each of its turns.
Velvet Lash. The queen lashes with her long, velvet-coated stinger.
Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage plus 5 (1d10) poison damage.
Spawn Swarm (Recharge 5–6). The queen lays or ruptures a toxin-filled brood sac, creating a Velvet Uch Ant Swarm in an unoccupied space within 10 feet of her.
The newly formed swarm acts immediately after the queen in the initiative order. If reduced below half HP, she instead releases two swarms.
BONUS ACTIONS
Pheromone Command. The queen chooses one Uch Ant Swarm she can sense. That swarm immediately uses its movement and makes one Swarm Bites attack.
REACTIONS
Protect the Mother. When the queen takes damage from a creature within 30 feet, one swarm of Uch Ants within that radius may move up to its speed and enter the attacker’s space, making a Swarm Bites attack against them.
OPTIONAL: LAIR ACTIONS (Uch Nest) On initiative count 20 (losing ties), the queen may cause one of the following:
- Bursting Brood Chambers. A brood mound erupts. One new Velvet Uch Ant Swarm appears.
- Toxic Air Pockets. Release spores—creatures in a 15-foot radius must succeed on DC 15 Con save or take 10 (3d6) poison and be poisoned.
- Shifting Tunnel Walls. The earth shifts; all non-ants in the lair must make a DC 13 Dex save or fall prone.
Treasure
A DC 16 Nature check reduces poison damage from touching an ant corpse.
A skilled poisoner can harvest:
- Velvet Uch Contact Poison (3d10 vials)
- Uch Velvet Powder (used by assassins to irritate lungs) (3d10 vials)
- Royal Velvet Concentrate – On a high check (e.g., DC 20+), the poisoner can also extract 1d4 vials of a more potent “Royal” version that has a 2x damage and DM choice secondary effect.
Description
The Velvet Uch Ant Queen is a creature of unsettling elegance — a monstrous, dog-sized matriarch whose body is sheathed in the same shimmering, soft, violet “velvet” fuzz as her swarm… but magnified into something uncanny. Her carapace glows with deep purples and star-flecked blacks, subtly iridescent like polished obsidian wrapped in midnight silk. Where the common Velvet Uch worker is the size of a human thumb, the Queen towers over them like a living throne, her thorax tall and domed, her abdomen swollen and pulsating faintly with alchemical luminescence.
Her legs are long and jointed with regal precision, each one tufted with toxin-rich down. Anyone foolish enough to touch her (or be touched by her) is quickly introduced to the full potency of the Velvet Uch’s defense — a paralytic venom secreted through her velvet fibers, potent enough to drop an armored knight in seconds.
The Queen’s mandibles shimmer with a wicked metallic sheen, crafted by nature to carve stone as easily as flesh. When she clicks them together, the sound echoes like chitinous chimes. Her eyes, faceted and unsettlingly intelligent, glimmer with bioluminescent fire — a deep magenta that pulses in rhythm with the pheromonal signals she uses to command her swarm.
At the heart of her lair — usually a cavern hollowed by countless worker ants — she sits enthroned in a cradle of crystallized resin. The resin is warm, sticky, and strangely aromatic, exuding a faint floral perfume that masks the deadly toxins within. Surrounding her at all times are dozens of Velvet Uch workers, forming a living carpet that shifts, breathes, and attacks in unison at her slightest thought.
Legends claim the Queen’s velvet coat is so smooth that it can be mistaken for fine fabric — until it burns through flesh like acid-soaked wool. Druids warn that her presence warps the ecosystem around her, creating patches of purple-tinged moss, crystalline resin formations, and zones saturated with hallucinogenic pheromones. Adventurers who inhale these by mistake report visions of violet light, shimmering fractal patterns… and the Queen’s silhouette approaching from all directions at once.
A bit of backstory on this one, recently a new subscriber has been reading a lot of my old TTRPG posts. This one from March 23, 2009 caught his eye. That day the TTRPG blogging community monsterized themselves. Velvet Uch Ants is an anagram of Stev the Vulcan.
