Yes, I see how structurally the crew needed to be beamed outside the ship for the whole scene to work. It made sense that the foursome had to beam to the park given the problems Scotty has been having with the transporter. But I never quite understood why, after McCoy and Chekov are escorted inside the ship by Sulu, they shut the hatch so Kirk HAD to beam in and Gillian could pull her surprise hitchhiking routine. That is until I understood the logic behind Klingon Transporters.
Klingon transporters prioritize:
- “Deploy warriors in intimidating positions.”
- “Avoid ambushes.”
- “Permit dramatic entrances.”
- Check, at least as intimidating as a foursome of humans in hospital gowns can be.
- Check, no ambushes on beam in from hospital.
- Check, Gillian’s “surprise” leap into the future was certainly dramatic.
It wasn’t a cinematic coincidence, it was Klingon Transporter Logic.
