Ring of the Emerald Flame
Wondrous Item (artifact), requires attunement by a spellcaster or creature of extraordinary willpower {Wisdom or Intelligence 18+}
Forged from the concentrated essence of will itself, this ancient ring channels the raw power of thought into tangible light. Legends speak of an order of planar guardians who wielded its kindred rings to patrol the Astral Sea, keeping balance between chaos and law. Each bearer’s willpower determines the ring’s strength — and its limits.
The ring glows with a brilliant emerald aura that reflects the wearer’s emotional focus. Fear, doubt, or hesitation cause the light to dim — but courage and conviction make it burn like a newborn star.
Artifact Properties
Arcane Constructing Light.
The ring creates tangible, glowing green constructs of pure magical willpower. As an action, you may manifest one of the following shapes: Each lasts for one minute or as long the wearer is concentrating on the construct.
- Barrier: Creates a 10-foot-radius dome of force (as Wall of Force).
- Weapon: Conjures a melee or ranged weapon of light (counts as magical, uses spell attack bonus, deals 2d8 force damage).
- Tool or Object: You can form any nonmagical item no larger than 10 feet on a side (as Minor Conjuration but visible as glowing energy).
You can maintain a number of constructs equal to your proficiency bonus; each vanishes if more than 30 feet away.
Flight of the Emerald Will.
While attuned, you gain a flying speed equal to twice your walking speed and can hover. The ring emits a faint trail of green luminescence as you move.
Radiant Willpower (Recharge 5–6).
As a bonus action, you unleash a burst of emerald light. All hostile creatures of your choice within 30 feet must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier).
On a failure, they are frightened until the end of your next turn. Undead and fiends take 4d10 radiant damage and are blinded until the end of your next turn.
On a success, Undead and fiends take half damage and are stunned until the end of your next turn.
Bound by Will.
If your Wisdom score ever drops below 10, or you are frightened, charmed, or dominated, the ring’s light fades and its powers are suppressed until your mind regains clarity.
Emerald Power Reservoir (Charges + Daily Recharge Ritual) – The ring has a number of Emerald Charges equal to the wearer’s proficiency bonus × 3 (or simply 12 if you want it fixed).
Every construct/weapon/manifestation costs 1–3 (small, medium, large) charges.
When the ring hits 0 charges, its powers shut down.
To recharge, the wearer must perform a 1-minute ritual channeling a prepared arcane focus or spell slot into the ring as the wearer recites the engraved poem.
Recharges: Once every 24 hours, the ring can be fully recharged.
If attempted before the 24-hour mark, the ritual only restores 1d4 charges.
Sentience
The Ring of the Emerald Flame is a lawful neutral sentient item (Intelligence 16, Wisdom 18, Charisma 18). It communicates telepathically in calm, measured tones. It seeks worthy bearers who exemplify courage and integrity — and will abandon those ruled by fear. When asked it will provide guidance to the wearer.
Random Properties
The Ring of the Emerald Flame has the following additional properties (DM’s Choice for each):
- 2 minor beneficial properties
- 1 major beneficial property
- 1 major detrimental property
(These may be rolled per DMG guidelines or tailored to the campaign’s lore.)
Destroying the Ring
The Ring of the Emerald Flame can only be unmade in the heart of a star while a bearer willingly relinquishes its power — an act of true surrender of will. If the wearer is permanently killed the Ring will immediately fly off in search of the next worthy bearer.
