Ye Olde Shoppe of Magicks – Hilt of the Sun Sword of the Living Covenant

Weapon (longsword), artifact (requires attunement by a Paladin)

Appearance

The Sun Sword exists first as a hilt alone—ancient alloy wrapped in worn leather, its crossguard and pommel engraved with interlocking holy sigils evocative of the Star of David, representing covenant, balance, protection, and divine order.

When held by any non-paladin, it remains inert: a beautifully crafted but otherwise mundane hilt.

When brandished by a Paladin who has sworn an oath, the symbols ignite with golden-white radiance.

With a soft thunderclap and a rising harmonic hum, a blade of holy, living energy erupts forth, shaped like a sword but composed entirely of radiant covenant-light. The blade pulses subtly, as if alive—responding to faith, resolve, and righteousness.

Base Properties (All Levels)

  • Counts as a magic longsword
  • Damage type: radiant
  • Blade manifests only while wielded by an attuned paladin
  • Blade may be summoned or dismissed as a bonus action
  • Emits bright light (20 ft) and dim light (20 ft) beyond that
  • You may use Charisma instead of Strength for attack and damage rolls
  • If wielded by a creature who breaks their oath, the blade flickers and vanishes

Scalable Power: Covenant Awakening

The Sun Sword strengthens as the paladin’s oath deepens and their deeds echo across the world.

Tier I – Covenant Ignition (Levels 3–5)

The oath is spoken. The light answers.

  • +1 weapon
  • Damage: 1d8 radiant and 1d10 piercing
  • Against undead, fiends, and profane constructs, deal +1d4 radiant
  • Once per long rest, when you Divine Smite, you may reroll one radiant damage die

Tier II – Living Sunblade (Levels 6–10)

The covenant is carried, not merely sworn.

  • +2 weapon
  • Bonus damage vs undead/fiends/constructs becomes +1d6 radiant
  • Cast searing smite at 2nd level without a spell slot (PB per long rest)
  • Radiant Overflow: When you drop a creature to 0 HP, another enemy within 10 ft takes radiant damage equal to your CHA modifier

Tier III – Blade of Judgment (Levels 11–16)

The light now judges.

  • +3 weapon
  • Blade damage becomes 1d10 radiant and 1d12 piercing
  • Radiant damage ignores resistance
  • Once per long rest, you may cast sunbeam
  • While the blade is active, you gain advantage on saves vs fear and charm

Tier IV – Covenant of the Eternal Sun (Levels 17–20)

“The covenant is eternal.”

  • Bonus damage vs undead/fiends/constructs becomes +2d6 radiant
  • Creatures vulnerable to radiant damage take triple damage
  • When you Divine Smite, treat 1s on radiant damage dice as 2s
  • Solar Covenant (1/week): 30-ft-radius burst centered on you. Enemies: 10d10 radiant, CON save for half. Undead/fiends that fail are blinded for 1 minute. Allies regain 5d10 HP.

Oath Resonance (Optional, Flavor-Forward)

The living blade subtly changes hue based on oath:

  • Devotion: Pure white-gold, unwavering
  • Vengeance: Fierce solar flares along the edge
  • Ancients: Sunlight interwoven with verdant life
  • Redemption: Softer glow; the blade dims after unnecessary killing blows

Curious. Not a sword, really—more a covenant given shape. The hilt remembers. The blade forgives… once.
