Avalon is the island to which Britain’s legendary king Arthur was conveyed for the healing of his wounds after his final battle. It is also where Excalibur was forged. It is first mentioned in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia regum Britanniae (c. 1136)

Wyrd is a concept in Anglo-Saxon culture roughly corresponding to fate or personal destiny. The word is ancestral to Modern English weird, whose meaning has drifted towards an adjectival use with a more general sense of “supernatural” or “uncanny”, or simply “unexpected”.

Abbey Road has a two-fold meaning it is an actual street in London where the EMI recording studio used by the Beatles is located. It is the street the band is crossing on the cover of the Abbey Road album. Abbey Road was the 11th studio album recorded by the Beatles and named after the road.

The Keep of Ganelon, where the full story of King Artorius’ betrayal is revealed, is named for Ganelon the French knight who betrayed Charlemagne’s army to the Saracens, leading to the Battle of Roncevaux Pass.

Friar Nolan is the NPC who sends your wizard in search of the Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan is the Director of the Dark Knight Triology. The Dark Knight Rises was released just two months after Avalon was added to the game. I cannot say for certain that Friar Nolan is a shout-out to the Dark Knight director, but it is too much of a coincidence to not mention.

It was suggested that Sir Guy Gascoigne is inspired by Guy of Gisborne from Robin Hood legend. Other than the fact they are both called Guy, I’ve found no further indication of the inspiration. Not enough information to say definitively yes or no.

It was suggested that Calista, the Spriggan who captured Kerry Mustardseed was inspired by Callista the Calamity a character from the Netflix series Trollhunters and Wizards: Tales of Arcadia. However, since Trollhunters premiered in 2016, four years after Avalon, I’m going to say this is a coincidence that Netflix chose the same name and this is not a pop culture reference.
