I have put the entirety of Sunken City in one article as it is from start to finish a shout out to the 1999 Edward Norton and Brad Pitt film Fight Club.
Marla Stinger can be found in Nightside, outside of the School of Death. After receiving an unsuitable grade on her latest assignment from Professor Drake, she seeks to prove him wrong by entering Sunken City and proving the existence of the infamous Ghoul, Grubb.
Marla Singer, in The Fight Club was a strong-willed woman who came across as being a complete nutcase.
Paulson is the first Boss in Sunken City. He guards the Knock Scroll for Grubb, which Wizards must obtain in order to open the second gate.
Meat Loaf appears in the film as Robert “Bob” Paulson, who Norton’s narrator initially meets in a support group and who later joins a fight club and ultimately Tyler Durden’s Project Mayhem. During one of the group’s missions, Bob is shot dead by police, and his body is brought back to the group HQ. Norton’s narrator is overcome with frustration and grief in seeing his friend dead.
Norton is the second Boss in Sunken City. Wizards must defeat him in order to gain access to Grubb’s Castle. After you defeat him you will get the Tome of Decay which is used to open Durden Gate.
Edward Norton plays the Narrator in Fight Club. Brad Pitt plays Tyler Durden (spoiler) who turns out to be one of the Narrator’s personalities.
Grubb is the final Boss in Sunken City. He plans to raise an army of the Undead and rule the Spiral. Nobody (especially Prof Drake) believes young Marla that Grubb is real. Just like nobody talks about Fight Club
Fight Club is a 1999 American film directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter. It is based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk. Norton plays the unnamed narrator, who is discontented with his white-collar job. He forms a “fight club” with soap salesman Tyler Durden (Pitt), and becomes embroiled in a relationship with a destitute woman, Marla Singer (Bonham Carter).
I have always loved the pop culture references in Wizard (and Pirate) 101. This series was inspired by a series I did featuring the Heroes of Lemuria and their ties to early 20th Cent. pulp heroes. This is the fifth article chronicling the #W101PopCulture references starting in Wizard City. The current list of all the (known) Wizard City references can be found here. These articles were originally put together for a Facebook group I belong to. Although I am well versed in Pop Culture references but I do not claim to have caught them all. Let me know your favorites in the comments and if I’ve missed one you caught, let me know so I can add it to the list.
