Car Wars – Ballard, WA Maps 1-4

Ballard Washington is an autonomous zone within the city limits of Seattle WA. Once a city in its own right, the citizens of Ballard decided to secede from Seattle and form their own community when Seattle’s law enforcement agencies were ineffective at keeping the citizenry safe from the food riots and growing gang menace. Ballard is protected by the Ballard Residential Area Patrol (BRAP). BRAP keeps roaming gangs and undesirables out of town after dark Ballard is home to the Scandinavian/Nordic descendants of those who settled the area, Management of many of Seattle’s Hi-Tech firms, Fishermen, Dock Workers, Hipsters, and Cultists.

Ballard loves visitors. Ballard just doesn’t want visitors to stay.

Ballard is currently represented by these four 24″x36″ maps.

The Fremont/35th St/36th St intersection

Scenarios:
The Gauntlet: The Players and their vehicles were stopped by BRAP and detained (Why? doesn’t matter). Players build their personal vehicles. The catch, BRAP has unloaded ALL the weapons of the players vehicle. BRAP has barricaded off all the map exits. Players must survive (DMs choice time, laps, last man standing) 2x #players Ballard Driving School Graduates operating vehicles with dropped rear end weapons only. The BDS Grads will do everything they can to wreck the players (including playing chicken). Survivors will be escorted out of town and given their vehicles back at one of Ballard’s checkpoints.

Steal Lenin: The players have $250,000 to spend on their fleet and must have at least one vehicle capable of transporting (minimum of a 10-wheel truck) the statue off the map. The players have managed to get this far into Ballard by bluffing their way in. The players have managed to pull down the statue and get it loaded into the truck.

BRAP has sent in a LARGE force. For every vehicle in the Players’ fleet BRAP has sent one unit converging on Lenin Park from each of the four corners of the map (so a 4 to 1 advantage for BRAP). If the Players have five vehicles, BRAP has five vehicles entering from each major intersection at the four corners of the map at 80 mph. The Players need only exit the map at one of the corners.

The Main checkpoint into Ballard at the corner of Aurora Ave/99 and NW 85th St.

Scenarios:
Escape Ballard: The players in their pre-damaged (1 D6 for each armor position, tire, and exposed weapons system) vehicles are fleeing down North 85th Street at 65 mph (they just made a turn and haven’t got back up to speed). BRAP (1.5x BRAP units to Players) is following at 60 mph and enters the map on the next turn. Two units at the welcome center have been alerted but the officers have JUST gotten to their vehicles and start from dead stop. The bus gates have been alerted and are moving into position at 20 mph. The VMG bunkers have opened fire and any Ballard citizens out and about will likely take pot shots at you. Players win if they can exit north on Rt 99/Auroa Ave or east on 85th.

Break Into Ballard: It’s 3:00am. The gate buses are in place, Jack’s has closed. The tellers at the service station are concentrating on their customers and/or security cameras. BRAP has just two units at the Welcome center but the officers are inside the building.

The Players must successfully get half of their vehicles into town and off the map. Security will go into alert as soon as the buses move (either under their own power or as the result of a crash) and officers will run for their cars. VMGs open fire on the players two turns after the buses move. Three BRAP units will arrive east bound on 85th St and north bound on Aurora Ave at 60 mph the turn after that. Players win if they can exit the map into Ballard.

The Bear Area at the Woodland Park Zoo

Scenarios:
Justice: Saved for heinous offenders. Violate traffic laws? get the Gauntlet. Offend a local? get the Gauntlet. Something worse? JUSTICE. Woodland Park Zoo isn’t so much of a zoo anymore as it is a walled enclave for the animals. The bears (and other animals) roam wild. The Players have been herded into the Bear Parking lot near the entrance at North 59th. An equal number (to the number of players) of identical escape vehicles are parked at random in the parking lot. 2x (number of players) bears are roaming loose. Two Woodland Park Rangers are positioned in their vehicles near the entrance to keep the bears from escaping and two more are randomly patrolling the area (Rangers will NOT fire on Players unless fired upon). 3x (# players) resident vehicles are also in the parking lot to protect the bears.

Players need to run for the unlocked vehicles before the bears get them. Once in vehicle they must drive to the Judge (located at the exit path in the SW corner of the map) to get their pardon (only one pardon available per game). Once the pardon has been given THAT player must then evade his competitors and drive out of the exit. He or She has gained their freedom. The Rangers will shut the gate to prevent the others from escaping. The remaining surviving prisoners are brought back to holding until the next Judgement.

Rangers will fire on any Player attempting to exit without a pardon (they do outgun the provided vehicles). Citizens will fire (personal and vehicular weaponry on any player who causes damage to a Bear, Citizen Vehicle, or the Judge (even if it’s accidental so be wary of missed shots headed the direction of any of these). Players are free to fire on each other at whim.

Bears can run at 30 mph (move 3 .25″ squares each phase) on grassy surfaces and 20 mph (move 2 .25″ squares each phase) on asphalt. Bears like pedestrians can change direction on any phase of movement. Bears will run straight for pedestrians and attack these weary souls as soon as possible. These Bears are used to vehicles they can attack but usually will not attack vehicles unless fired upon. (Why attack the can when fresh meat is wandering around freely).

Bears within 1 .25″ square of a pedestrian or vehicle can do a swipe attack with one claw for 1 D6 damage to pedestrians, pedestrian armor and plastic vehicle armor (1 D6 -4 to metal armor). Bears next to a pedestrian or vehicle can do two claws and bite damage for 3 D6 damage to pedestrians, pedestrian armor and plastic vehicle armor (1 D6 -4 to metal armor).
