Desiccated Treebeard

Thank you to Ashley D. for this one. This is another “D’oh” moment, I should have noticed this one my first time through.

Your wizard has defeated the Creeping Water Bug, but the fould stench remains. Sonya Jade-Eye sends your wizard to the Treebeard cave to procure some Desert Aloe. The Desert Aloe will purify Big Water.

Once you enter Treebeard Cave you are greeted by a Desiccated Treebeard, “You come with spells of fire and ice, biting, scratching, hacking, burning!”

Treebeard, or Fangorn in Sindarin, is a tree-giant character in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. He is an Ent and is said by Gandalf to be “the oldest living thing that still walks beneath the Sun upon this Middle-earth.” He lives in the ancient Forest of Fangorn, to which he has given his name. It lies at the southern end of the Misty Mountains. He is described as being about 14 feet (4.5 m) in height, and in appearance similar to a beech or an oak.

Treebeard

In The Two Towers, Treebeard meets with Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took, two Hobbits of the Shire. This meeting proves to have consequences that contribute significantly to the story and enables the events that occur in The Return of the King.

This dialogue takes place between Treebeard and the two Hobbits.
Pippin: “It’s talking to us, Merry. The tree is talking!”
Treebeard: “Tree? I am no tree! I am an Ent.”
Merry: [fascinated] “A tree-herder. A shepherd of the forest!”
Pippin: “Don’t talk to it, Merry. Don’t encourage it!”
Treebeard: “Treebeard, some call me.”
Pippin: “And… whose side are you on?
Treebeard: “Side? I am on nobody’s side, because nobody is on my side, little Orc. No one cares for the woods anymore.”
Merry: “We’re not Orcs. We’re Hobbits!”
Treebeard: “‘Hobbits’? Never heard of a Hobbit before.” [getting angry] “Sounds like Orc mischief to me! They come with fire! They come with axes! Gnawing, biting, breaking, hacking, burning!! Destroyers and usurpers, CURSE THEM!!”

Although I am well versed in Pop Culture references but I do not claim to have caught them all. Let me know your favorites in the comments and if I’ve missed one you caught, let me know so I can add it to the list.
