
Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch

(requires attunement by a cleric, paladin, or spectral warden ranger of good alignment)
Appearance
A gilded spherical reliquary engraved with tiny scriptural passages and capped with a silver pull-ring. When held, it is faintly warm to the touch and smells subtly of incense.
This item has 1 charge. If miscounted, the Holy Hand Grenade loses its magic and becomes a mundane golden orb worth 20 GP.
Ritual of Counting
As an action, you may begin the Ritual of Counting. While holding the grenade, you must loudly and clearly proclaim:
“One.”
“Two.”
“Five.”
If you say “Three” at any point before throwing the grenade, the magic fizzles and the charge is lost.
If you say “Four,” the grenade detonates immediately in your space.
If you correctly say “One… Two… Five,” you must throw the grenade at a point you can see within 60 feet.
Sacred Throw
After completing the Ritual of Counting, you must make a ranged attack with the Holy Hand Grenade against a point you can see within 60 feet.
You are proficient with this attack if you are attuned to the grenade. Use your Dexterity modifier for the attack roll. Roll to hit 18 (1d20 +DEX modifier)
On a hit, the grenade lands within 5 feet of the chosen point and detonates there.
On a miss, the grenade deviates from the intended point. The distance it scatters equals the amount of the miss × 5 feet (minimum 5 feet). Roll a d12 to determine the direction of deviation (12 = north, then clockwise).
If the attack roll is a natural 1, the grenade lands at your feet rolls 5 feet away from you in a d12 direction and detonates there.
Divine Detonation
The grenade explodes in a radiant sphere with a 20-foot radius.
Creatures in the area must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw.
On a failure:
- Take 10d10 radiant damage
- Fiends and undead take an additional 5d10 radiant damage
- Creatures reduced to 0 HP are turned to ash
On a success:
- Take half damage
- Objects and structures take double damage.
Bonus vs. Blasphemous Beasts
If the target area contains:
- A fiend
- An undead
- Or a creature that has committed egregious acts of mockery
The damage dice become maximized.
Sacred Safeguard
The grenade does not harm:
- The attuned wielder
- Creatures of good alignment within 5 feet of the wielder
Everyone else? Fair game.
Lore
Legends tell that this sacred relic was gifted by the Lords of Antioch to be used against an unspeakable beast of surprising smallness and extreme velocity.
It is said to function only when the sacred number is properly proclaimed.
And the number shall be five.
