Nitpicking the Easter Eggs of the Roku SPACE Screensaver

The Roku Space Screensaver made its debut in 2020. It’s a bit different from the Roku City Screensaver in that nearly every reference is a Science fiction one.

Easter Eggs from the Prime Roku City screen saver.

The Cockpit

Starting from the left; the hexagon just about the “Roku Play ad” looks like a ubiquitous droid computer interface from the Star Wars films. The orange and blue computer interface next to it is an LCARS PADD (Library Computer Access Retrieval System, Personal Access Display Device) from Star Trek: the Next Generation. Just to the right of the ‘play ad’ is either Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber from Return of the Jedi or Doctor Who’s Sonic Screwdriver. The big cockpit window and controls underneath it are from the Millennium Falcon (Star Wars, pay close attention to Han’s Dice hanging there. Those a dice are a tribute to Harrison Ford’s character from American Graffiti). The vertical cyan lights on either side of the window are reminiscent of the lights on the stair in Cloud City’s carbon freezing chamber from The Empire Strikes Back. That looks like Darth Vader’s light saber from Revenge of the Sith just to the right of the window. The cat in the ventilation system is Jonesy from Alien. The rectangle with the red spot is Hal 9000’s interface from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Seen in the window are a Sand Worm from Dune (you can just see Paul Atreides riding it.), and Lone Star’s Eagle 5 from Spaceballs.

The Airlock

Jonesy from Alien and the carbon freezing chamber lights start on the left. Top left, that’s a Xenomorph from the Alien franchise. HAL 9000’s interface is just to the left of the airlock. The triangle in the lower left seems to be full of Galifreyian script from Doctor Who. Standing inside the airlock is David Bowman in his space suit from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The cracked egg from the Alien movie poster sits on the floor next to Dave (Gerrit wondered if it might reference the Howard the Duck movie poster). Visible outside the airlock is an Apollo Command Module referencing either The Right Stuff or Apollo 13. On the right, just underneath the Empire lighting are slash marks and triangle graphics, those looks a LOT like Cardassian computer interface graphics from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Underneath that is a grey scale version of Star Trek TNG’s LACRS interface.

The Viewscreen – Most of those partial graphics on the bottom look AWFULLY familiar. Anyone?
These, the third one in, I KNOW I’ve seen it before, the square with the wavy lines.

Starting from the far left is an Asteroid in orbit of Planet Martadunie (Mars, Tatooine, Dune) inside the asteroid is the Space Worm that swallowed the Millennium Falcon in The Empire Strikes Back. On the surface are Jabba the Hutt’s sail barge and the Sarlaac Pit from Return of the Jedi. Next to the sail barge is the Garignak (Rock Creature) from Galaxy Quest. The Martian base and surface vehicle from The Martian are next. Paul Atreides “Maud Dib” is riding a Sandworm. In orbit are an unnamed Federation starship from Star Trek (the silhouette is close but just off from the USS Enterprise NCC-1701) and Lone Star’s Eagle 5 from Spaceballs. In orbit of Abydos is either a shuttlepod from 2001 or the ship from Explorers. The Pinwheel Galaxy behind the Eagle 5 is in reference to A Wrinkle in Time or The Black Hole.

Abydos now on the viewer

As the Pinwheel Galaxy and shuttle pod slide off to the left, Abydos comes in to view. That’s a Go’auld starship coming to rest on top of the pyramid with the Stargate in the background from Stargate. The Tyrell Corporation and floating billboard from Blade Runner are right next to it. And there’s the Apollo Command Module.

Planet S on screen Captain

Just above the “S” lake is the Monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The machine and radio telescopes from Contact are next. On the far right is the alien ship from Arrival. The asteroid with Spaceworm can be seen to have a vehicle on the surface. That vehicle is either the Armadillo from Armageddon or NASA’s Spirit or Opportunity, the Martian Rovers. In the background are the wormhole from Interstellar and Warner Bros. basketball from Space Jam. Though I would be remiss if I didn’t point out Planet Basketball was featured in the 1978 Star Wars spoof Hardware Wars.

Does anyone know why the red gems litter the surface?
