Nitpicking has developed terms going all the way back to Phil Farrand’s original books. “Cabbage Head”; wherein a character asks a stupid question that they should know the answer to so another character can explain it to the audience. Counselor Troi was an infamous “Cabbage Head” in TNG. “Jynnan Tonnyx Technology“; wherein two (or more) completely different pieces of technology look identical. And today we look at “Q-Branch Tech”; wherein characters have oddly specific technology on hand that conveniently handles an unforeseen complication. So named for the fact that Q-Branch invariably gives James (especially during the Roger Moore – Pierce Brosnan eras) some piece of tech that will MacGuffin his way out of a problem that Bond has never before encountered. Notable Q-Branch Tech; an attaché case with gold coins concealed in the snaps (From Russia with Love), a wrist watch that emits a magnetic field (Live and Let Die), toothpaste that doubles as plastic explosive (License to Kill), or a man’s belt with a concealed rappelling line (Goldeneye).
Q-Branch Tech is not limited to the Bond universe. We find it in the MCU as well. The Kree are not expecting to run into a Flerken as they chase Vers and the Tesseract across the cosmos. Yet when they DO unexpectedly encounter a Flerken, the KREE happen to have a restraining muzzle and Flerken cage. Why? Why does Anti-Flerken Tech seem to be standard for Kree recovery teams? The Kree must have their own version of a soothsaying Q-Branch.
