You’ve heard the phrase ‘one fell swoop’?
The phrase “one fell swoop” means doing something all at once, in a single, sudden, and comprehensive action.
The phrase was coined by William Shakespeare in his play Macbeth (circa 1606). In Act IV, Scene 3, the character Macduff receives the devastating news that Macbeth has murdered his wife, children, and entire household. Overwhelmed by grief, Macduff asks: “All my pretty chickens and their dam / At one fell swoop?“
Shakespeare created a metaphor comparing the merciless killer to a bird of prey (like a hawk or kite) that swoops down out of the sky to instantly and viciously snatch its helpless victims. Shakespeare’s usage of “fell” is an archaic, medieval adjective meaning fierce, savage, cruel, or ruthless. It shares the same root as the word “felon”. And “swoop” refers to the swift, diving plunge a bird of prey makes to capture its dinner.
How the Meaning Changed
Originally, the idiom was used specifically to describe a terribly destructive or tragic event. Over the centuries, the specific meaning of the word “fell” faded from everyday language. Today, the phrase is used more neutrally to describe accomplishing any multiple or complex task all at once.
Why the etymology lesson?
This month I’ve been focused on my reasons for the inspiration behind my homebrews.
A significant portion of my inspiration comes from spoonerisms. I now present the the Swell Foop.
Among wind-scoured mountain passes, shattered watchtowers, and the blackened crowns of ancient forests, there are whispered tales of a creature feared by dragons, giants, and sky sailors alike: the Swell Foop. Scholars argue whether the beast is a forgotten primordial predator, an elemental spirit of storms, or a curse born from the rage of the skies themselves. Whatever its origin, every culture that shares the high places of the world knows the same warning — when the winds suddenly fall silent and small stones begin to tremble, a Swell Foop is hunting.
Unlike ordinary monsters, a Swell Foop does not merely attack. It descends. Survivors describe the beast as an avalanche with wings, capable of scattering entire warbands in a single deafening burst of wind and thunder. The phrase “taken in one swell foop” has become grim tavern slang among mercenaries and adventurers, referring to any disaster so sudden and complete that resistance becomes meaningless. Caravan routes have been abandoned after a nesting pair claimed nearby cliffs, and more than one proud kingdom has discovered that castle walls matter very little against a predator that hunts from the clouds.
Yet perhaps most terrifying is the creature’s fanatical devotion to its young. Entire adventuring companies have met ignoble ends after attempting to steal a Foopling from its nest, lured by the hatchlings’ impossible cuteness and rumored value to eccentric druids and beast tamers. Rangers tell stories of armored knights reduced to gibbering panic when a distant shriek echoed through the canyons moments after a Foopling was disturbed. Veterans know the old saying well:
“Touch not the fluffy one,
lest the sky itself grow talons.”
Swell Foop
Large monstrosity, chaotic evil
Standing twelve feet tall, this nightmare raptor has ragged midnight feathers, lantern-yellow eyes, and a wingspan wide enough to blot out torchlight. Its hooked beak resembles a grinning mask, and the thunderous gusts from its wings can scatter entire battle lines.

Traits
Flyby. The Swell Foop doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks when it flies out of an enemy’s reach.
Predator of Panic. A frightened creature within 60 feet of the Swell Foop has disadvantage on saving throws against the creature’s abilities.
Rending Dive. If the Swell Foop flies at least 40 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a Talon attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 14 (4d6) slashing damage and must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
One Swell Foop (Recharge 5–6). The creature beats its colossal wings with explosive force. Each creature of the Swell Foop’s choice within 30 feet must make a DC 17 Strength saving throw. On a failure, a creature:
- takes 22 (4d10) thunder damage,
- is pushed up to 30 feet,
- knocked prone,
- and any held object is flung 10 feet away.
Flying creatures that fail the save also fall up to 30 feet before recovering.
On a successful save, the creature takes half damage and isn’t moved or knocked prone.
Actions
Multiattack
The Swell Foop makes three attacks: one with its Beak and two with its Talons.
Beak
Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 18 (2d10 + 7) piercing damage.
Talons
Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) slashing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 16). The Swell Foop can grapple up to two creatures at once.
Screech of the Fell Sky (Recharge 4–6)
The Swell Foop emits a shriek like tearing metal and hurricane winds. Creatures of its choice within 60 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened until the end of the Swell Foop’s next turn.
A creature frightened this way that fails by 5 or more must immediately use its reaction to move up to its speed away from the Swell Foop.
Legendary Actions
The Swell Foop can take 2 legendary actions, choosing from the options below.
Wing Buffet. The Swell Foop moves up to half its flying speed.
Snap Attack. The Swell Foop makes one Beak attack.
Storm Feather (Costs 2 Actions). Razor-sharp electrified feathers blast in a 15-foot cone. Creatures in the area take 10 (3d6) lightning damage, DC 16 Dexterity save for half.
Tactics
The Swell Foop fights like an intelligent ambush predator:
- Opens with Screech of the Fell Sky
- Uses One Swell Foop to scatter the party and isolate squishier targets
- Dive-bombs prone enemies
- Grapples casters or archers and drops them from height
- Constantly repositions in the air to avoid being surrounded
Foopling
Tiny monstrosity, chaotic neutral
Downy, wide-eyed, and deceptively adorable, and approximately the size of a medium dog, Fooplings resemble fluffy baby owls crossed with puffins and tiny griffons. Their oversized golden eyes, wobbling head-tilts, and squeaky chirps trigger immediate protective instincts in most humanoids.
Which is unfortunate.
Because every Foopling within three miles has a psychic “MAMA!” distress cry that summons the nearest adult Swell Foop like a feathery natural disaster.

Challenge 2 (450 XP)
Traits
Irresistibly Adorable
A creature that starts its turn within 15 feet of a Foopling must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or become Charmed until the start of its next turn.
While charmed this way, the creature:
- cannot willingly attack the Foopling,
- speaks to it in a baby voice,
- and has disadvantage on Perception checks not involving the Foopling.
A creature that succeeds on the save is immune to this Foopling’s Irresistibly Adorable trait for 24 hours.
Druids and Rangers have disadvantage on this saving throw.
Distress Peep
When a Foopling drops below half its hit points, it emits an ear-piercing psychic squeal audible to Swell Foops up to 3 miles away.
If an adult Swell Foop is within range, it becomes aware of:
- the Foopling’s exact location,
- the number of hostile creatures nearby,
- and who hurt its baby.
The Swell Foop arrives in:
- 1d4 rounds outdoors,
- or 2d6 rounds in enclosed environments.
Tiny Menace
The Foopling can move through the space of any Medium or larger creature. The first time it enters a creature’s space on a turn, that creature must succeed on a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or take 7 (2d6) slashing damage from frantic pecking and wing-claw flailing.
Actions
Peck
Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 8 (1d8 + 4) piercing damage.
Pocket Theft
The Foopling targets one creature within 5 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or the Foopling steals one small visible object:
- a potion,
- spell component pouch item,
- shiny coin,
- gemstone,
- ration,
- or suspiciously tasty mushroom.
The Foopling then immediately flies up to half its speed away without provoking opportunity attacks.
Bonus Actions
Weaponized Sadness (Recharge 5–6)
The Foopling trembles, chirps pitifully, and curls into a fluffy ball.
Each creature within 20 feet that can see it must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or immediately use its reaction (if available) to move toward the Foopling and protect it.
Creatures affected this way grant the Foopling half cover until the start of its next turn.
Ecology & Behavior
Fooplings are:
- obsessive collectors of shiny junk,
- violently possessive of snacks,
- naturally mischievous,
- and utterly fearless when they think adults are nearby.
A nest typically contains:
- 2d6 Fooplings,
- half-chewed armor,
- stolen spellbooks,
- and at least one magical item accidentally dragged home.
Experienced (Rangers at advantage) adventurers know the ancient warning:
“If the baby hoots, the storm boots.”
Which roughly translates to:
“Run before Mama Foop turns your party into decorative canyon mulch.”
