Berrin & Velquor – Small gods, Saints and minor divinity!

Welcome to July! America turned 250 years old two days ago (as I begin this article) and it’s time once again for another RPG Blog Carnival. This month’s topic of Small Gods, Saints and minor divinity! is being jointly hosted by Sean at Sea of Stars and Xaosseed at Seed of Worlds.

Let me state right off the bat that I am a Christian and EVERY character I’ve ever played has worshipped THE God of gods, Supreme Being of whatever realm we played in. My regular Tuesday game holds that Jah-Wei (the Elvish name for this Divine Power) is the One True God and all other near-ominpotent powers are, to quote Ego from Guardians of the Galaxy II, “Small g, son.”

So what to write about…

I could expound on my 16-year-old article (Order of the D30: Saints for your Cleric to Invoke) about saints and the epithets used in conjunction with their name. Or I could write an intro paragraph to my recently fleshed out Shaven Cult Vet (an anagram of Stev the Vulcan) but both of those options sidestep the unwritten rule of the Blog Carnival. Bring something new to the Table!

So in that spirit I present these two demigods, servants of Jah-Wei. (Bonus points if you can guess my inspirations):

This sounds better if you imagine “The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down Playing”

Berrin grins, “Well, what’s up Duke!”
Nothing shakes his smile.
Velquor cries, “Stand back, my friends!
I’ll save you in my style!”

One brings wisdom, one brings noise,
Both make evil flee.
Serving the Creator’s will,
That’s their destiny!

Brother Berrin the Laughing Wayfarer

The Laughing Servant of the One True Creator

“Eh… What’s up Duke? looks like you’re takin’ yourself a little too seriously, ain’t ya?”

Brother Berrin in his true form.

Among the countless servants of the One True Creator walks a humble demigod known simply as Brother Berrin, the Laughing Wayfarer. He holds no throne, commands no celestial host, and wears no crown. Instead, he wanders the roads of the world as an ordinary traveler, appearing as whatever race or people best blends into the land he visits. Kings mistake him for a beggar, archmages dismiss him as a fool, and tyrants overlook him entirely; until their own arrogance becomes the instrument of their defeat. Though few recognize him, those who meet him never forget his easy smile or his calm, unshakable confidence.

Brother Berrin is the divine patron of cleverness over strength, humility over pride, and unexpected deliverance. He possesses no mighty celestial weapon, for his greatest gifts are perfect timing, impossible preparedness, and an uncanny ability to let evil unravel itself. Somehow he always has exactly what is needed which arrives at precisely the right moment, and nudges events just enough that villains become victims of their own greed, vanity, or overconfidence. He rarely humiliates the innocent, reserving his gentle mockery for those whose pride has blinded them. Devils fear him not because he is the strongest servant of the Creator, but because every scheme they weave somehow becomes the very trap that ensnares them.

Despite his divine nature, Brother Berrin seeks neither worship nor glory. He cheerfully credits every success to “the Boss,” his affectionate title for the One True Creator, insisting he is merely carrying out his Master’s work. He prefers to be found beside a campfire, tending a ferry, mending a wagon wheel, or sharing a quiet meal with weary travelers rather than standing in the halls of heaven. Many heroes later realize that the kind stranger who offered a bit of timely advice, a length of rope, or an encouraging smile before their greatest trial was none other than the Laughing Wayfarer himself, faithfully guiding the Creator’s children with wisdom, mercy, and just a hint of divine mischief.

Divine Portfolio

Brother Berrin is the demigod of:

  • Cleverness over strength
  • Humility over pride
  • Mercy through embarrassment
  • Unexpected deliverance
  • Divine irony
  • Roads and wandering
  • The triumph of the underestimated

He exists to remind Creation that evil is defeated not merely by might but because arrogance blinds itself.

Nothing ever seems to upset him. The apocalypse? “…Could be worse.”

Ancient dragon? “Ohhh… that’s a pretty big lizard.”

Demon Prince? “You know… folks keep tellin’ me pride comes before a fall.”

He never raises his voice. He never boasts. He never rushes. He simply lets evil defeat itself.

Divine Powers

Cosmic Timing

Everything somehow happens at exactly the right moment. The bridge collapses… …after he crosses.

The avalanche falls… on pursuing demons.

The villain pulls the wrong lever, not because of luck. But because the Creator has quietly rearranged Creation through Berrin’s faithful obedience.

Impossible Preparation

He always has exactly what is needed.

Need rope? He has rope.

Need a mirror? He pulls one out of his pocket.

Need holy water? “Funny ya should mention that, Deacon…”

No one has ever seen him pack anything.

Holy Misdirection

He rarely defeats enemies directly. Instead, he convinces devils to argue with each other. Berrin makes dragons become distracted by their own vanity. He allows liches to explain their plans long enough for heroes to arrive.

He wins by letting pride consume itself.

Gentle Mockery

Mockery is his greatest weapon. He never humiliates the innocent, only the proud. The more arrogant and boastful someone is, the more ridiculous they appear.

Entire wars have ended because tyrants accidentally embarrassed themselves before their own armies.

His Relationship with the One True Creator and Other Celestial Beings

Unlike many celestial beings Berrin possesses no ambition whatsoever. He has never asked for promotion. He has never requested worship and never desired glory. When praised, he simply tips his hat and says, “The Boss deserves the credit.” He refers to the Creator simply as ‘The Boss.’ Never irreverently. and always affectionately.

Among the Boss’ other servants, some angels adore him. Others find him utterly baffling. Military archangels will spend centuries planning campaigns against demonic realms, only for Berrin to wander into Hell carrying a picnic basket and accidentally start a rebellion among the demons.

Again.

Devils Fear him not because he is powerful, but because he is impossible to predict. No temptation works. No insult lands. No threat changes his smile. And somehow… their own schemes always become their undoing.

Adventurers Encounter Him

He may appear as:

  • the ferryman
  • the stable hand
  • an innkeeper
  • the old traveler by the fire
  • the man fishing beside the road

He never announces himself.

Most parties don’t realize who he was until months later.

Berrin is a benevolent demigod who isn’t a prankster for the sake of chaos, he’s a divine trickster whose wit is always in service of justice, mercy, and reminding the proud that wisdom often arrives wearing patched boots and an easy smile.

Brother Berrin as most mortals see him.

“Funny thing about evil…

It spends so much time diggin’ pits for everybody else…

Eventually it forgets where it put ’em.”

Divine Presence

  • Brother Berrin cannot be surprised.
  • He always acts first in initiative.
  • Hostile creatures cannot gain advantage against him.

Impossible Preparation

At the beginning of every round Brother Berrin may produce one mundane object worth less than 500 gp that would reasonably fit inside a backpack.

Always an Exit

Whenever Brother Berrin or an ally within 60 feet would fail a saving throw, he may instead choose for them to succeed.

Unlimited use.

Gentle Mockery

Whenever a hostile creature misses Brother Berrin with an attack, it must succeed on a DC 26 Wisdom saving throw.

On a failure:

  • loses concentration
  • becomes Frightened until end of next turn
  • cannot take reactions

Pride Before the Fall

Whenever a creature rolls a natural 1 while attacking Brother Berrin, it suffers the consequences of its own attack.

Examples:

  • falls prone
  • weapon breaks (DM discretion)
  • strikes another enemy
  • triggers its own trap
  • walks into its own spell effect

Legendary creatures instead suffer 6d10 psychic damage and are knocked prone.

Divine Timing

Once per round Brother Berrin may force any creature he can see to reroll any d20 roll.

He chooses which result is used.

Actions

Walking Stick

Melee Weapon Attack: +16 to hit.

Hit: 12 (1d8+8) bludgeoning plus 22 (4d10) radiant.

Instead of damage Brother Berrin may simply knock the creature prone.

“Easy There.”

One creature within 60 feet must make a DC 26 Wisdom save.

On a failure it is affected by all of the following until the end of its next turn:

  • Incapacitated
  • Speed 0
  • Cannot cast spells
  • Cannot make attacks

The creature simply stands there, suddenly unsure of itself.

Redirect Fate (Recharge 5–6)

Brother Berrin chooses up to five creatures he can see.

Until the start of his next turn: Whenever one of those creatures damages another creature… it instead damages one of Brother Berrin’s choosing.

Bonus Actions

Helpful Hint

One ally who can hear him gains:

  • Advantage on all attack rolls
  • Advantage on saving throws
  • Advantage on ability checks

until the start of Berrin’s next turn.

Reactions

“Missed Me.”

When hit by an attack…

  • Brother Berrin simply isn’t there.
  • The attack automatically misses.
  • He appears anywhere within 30 feet.

Unlimited.

Legendary Actions (3)

Walk Along

Move up to his speed without provoking.

Produce Exactly the Thing

Use Impossible Preparation.

Well… That’s Unfortunate.

One creature rerolls a successful d20.

Mythic Trait

The Boss Has a Plan

The first time Brother Berrin would reach 0 hit points…

he instead returns to full hit points.

Every ally immediately regains all hit points.

All fear, curses, poison, disease, and charm effects end.

Every enemy must succeed on a DC 26 Wisdom saving throw or become Stunned until the end of its next turn as they suddenly realize that every setback, every coincidence, and every “lucky break” throughout the battle was part of a design far greater than themselves.

Design Philosophy

Unlike most demigods, Brother Berrin isn’t meant to overwhelm heroes with raw force. If the party somehow opposes him, they’ll quickly discover that every attack goes awry, every clever plan has already been anticipated, and every act of arrogance becomes its own punishment. In contrast, parties who fight alongside him find themselves miraculously succeeding at impossible odds; not because he steals the spotlight, but because he quietly ensures they become the heroes the One True Creator intended them to be. His greatest miracle is making everyone else look extraordinary.

Velquor Tharn, the Loud Herald

The Reluctant Vain-glorious Champion of the One True Creator

“Now hold on just one glorious minute… surely I’m the obvious choice for this mission!”

“What am I gonna do? What would Brother Berrin do? What would Velquor Tharn do?… Wait a minute, I am Velquor Tharn!   Yes! I’m going to be the hero of this adventure!

Not every servant of the One True Creator is humble.

Velquor Tharn certainly isn’t.

He believes he is destined for greatness. He craves recognition, applause, and the admiration of both mortals and angels alike. He enters every room as though trumpets ought to sound, speaks with absolute confidence even when he has no idea what he’s doing, and somehow manages to turn even the most routine task into a grand saga celebrating his own indispensable courage and gallantry.

Velquor, is one of the more unusual demigods in service to the One True Creator. Unlike the quiet saints and humble wanderers of the celestial host, Velquor is loud, theatrical, and utterly convinced that he was destined for greatness. He enters every room expecting applause, volunteers for impossible missions before hearing the details, and has an uncanny talent for turning even the simplest errand into an epic tale of his own heroism. Yet beneath his bluster lies a servant whose heart, though often tangled in pride, has never stopped belonging to the Creator.

Velquor serves as the divine patron of ambition tempered by duty, courage despite fear, perseverance, and second chances. His greatest struggle is not against demons or dragons, but against his own ego. The One True Creator continually refines him through humorous failures, spectacular misadventures, and well-earned embarrassment; not to shame him, but to teach him humility. Every boast becomes a lesson, every setback an opportunity for growth, until the servant who sought glory slowly learns that true greatness is found in faithful service rather than recognition.

Though angels often find him exasperating and devils delight in mocking his oversized confidence, neither can deny his greatest virtue: when innocent lives are truly at stake, Velquor never turns away. He may grumble, insist someone else would be better suited, or loudly question why he was chosen, but when the moment comes, he steps forward without hesitation. More than one company of heroes has survived because the loud, overconfident traveler they dismissed as an arrogant fool proved willing to stand alone against impossible odds. In the end, Velquor reminds all of Creation that the One True Creator does not seek flawless servants, only hearts willing to answer the call, even if they complain all the way there.

Yet for all his bluster, there is something the Creator alone sees within him.

When the innocent are truly in danger… when darkness closes in… when every avenue of escape has vanished… Velquor Tharn never runs. He complains loudly. He argues. He insists someone else would be better suited. Then he charges into danger anyway.

Divine Portfolio

Velquor Tharn is the demigod of:

  • Ambition tempered by duty
  • Courage despite fear
  • Joyful resilience
  • Holy perseverance
  • Glorious second chances
  • Confidence that must learn humility

He reminds Creation that the Creator does not require perfect servants, only willing ones.

Appearance

Velquor dresses as though he expects every day to become a royal celebration; elegant coats, bright sashes, polished boots, and a billowing cape (even if there’s no breeze) perhaps a touch too extravagant. Everything is just a little more dramatic than necessary. His clothes are often immaculate when he begins a journey and hopelessly ruined by the end. Yet somehow after the battle is over his ruined clothes are immaculate once more.

Personality

  • Velquor desperately wants to be important.
  • He volunteers for impossible missions before hearing the details.
  • He loudly announces his own brilliance.
  • He occasionally takes credit for miracles that obviously weren’t his doing.
  • He is convinced every prophecy is secretly about him.
  • He is almost always wrong. Almost.

The Creator’s Lesson

Unlike Brother Berrin, whose wisdom comes naturally, Velquor learns through embarrassment. Every boast becomes a lesson. Every failure becomes growth. Every spectacular disaster peels away another layer of pride. And somehow he always becomes a slightly better servant than he was yesterday. The Creator never humiliates him to destroy him only to refine him.

Divine Gift

Velquor possesses uncanny resilience; explosions throw him through windows, dragons swat him off cliffs, and giants may flatten him beneath wagons. Yet he always survives; bruised, soot-covered, with his tattered cape still attached ready to complain about it.

Angels’ Opinion

The heavenly hosts have mixed feelings about Valquor Tharn; some find him exhausting, others find him endlessly entertaining. Many quietly admit that, despite all appearances, they would rather have Velquor beside them in battle than many quieter saints. Because when hope seems lost, he somehow refuses to stay down.

Devils Despise Him

Demonic forces despise him not because he is Jah Wei’s wisest servant nor the strongest. But because every attempt to break his spirit fails; his pride may be wounded, his dignity may be in tatters, his plans may collapse spectacularly. Yet he always gets back up. And evil hates those who refuse to quit.

When Adventurers Encounter Him

Adventurers first mistake him for an insufferable braggart, then a nuisance, then an accidental ally. Only later do they realize that the loud traveler who insisted on leading the expedition was also the one who stood between them and certain death when everything went wrong.

“Now, if everybody has finished admiring my magnificence…
We should probably go save those people.”

Divine Traits

Hero Complex

Velquor has advantage on every attack against creatures whose CR is higher than his allies’.

Whenever a creature larger than Large attacks an ally within 60 feet, Velquor may move up to his speed toward that creature without provoking opportunity attacks.

“Pick on somebody your own celestial rank!”

Impossible Survivor

The first time each round Velquor would be reduced to 0 hit points he instead drops to 1 hit point. He immediately regains 30 hit points. He dusts himself off complaining loudly, then continues fighting.

Center of Attention

Hostile creatures within 60 feet have disadvantage attacking anyone except Velquor unless they succeed on a DC 26 Wisdom save.

Actions

Rapier of Reputation

Melee Weapon Attack: +18 to hit

Hit: 14 (1d8+10) piercing plus 31 (7d8) radiant.

The target cannot become Invisible or benefit from magical disguises until the end of its next turn.

“YOU’RE DESPICABLE!” (Recharge 5–6)

Velquor points dramatically at one creature within 120 feet and loudly condemns its wickedness before heaven and earth.

The target must make a DC 26 Charisma saving throw.

On a failure:

  • It immediately loses all resistances and damage immunities until the end of Velquor’s next turn.
  • It cannot knowingly speak a lie or magically disguise its true intentions.
  • It has disadvantage on all attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks.
  • The first attack that hits it before the start of Velquor’s next turn is automatically a critical hit.

If the target is a fiend, undead, or aberration, it also takes 45 (10d8) radiant damage as the light of the One True Creator exposes the corruption within.

On a successful save, the creature instead takes half the radiant damage and suffers disadvantage on its next attack roll.

“When Velquor pronounces a creature despicable, the Creator allows everyone present to see that creature for what it truly is.”

Dramatic Entrance (Recharge 6)

Velquor teleports up to 120 feet in a flash of radiant light.

Every enemy within 20 feet must succeed on a DC 26 Wisdom save or become Frightened until the end of its next turn.

Every ally within the same area gains 20 temporary hit points.

Bonus Actions

Stirring Speech

Choose up to three allies.

Until the start of Velquor’s next turn they gain:

  • Advantage on attacks
  • Advantage on saving throws against fear
  • +10 feet movement

Reactions

“OH, NOW YOU’VE DONE IT!”

When an enemy critically hits an ally Velquor immediately makes one Rapier attack against that enemy.

If it hits the attack automatically becomes a critical hit.

Legendary Actions (3)

Witty Remark

One creature within 60 feet has disadvantage on its next attack.

Heroic Flourish

Move up to half speed and make one Rapier attack.

Not on My Watch

An ally rerolls a failed saving throw.

Mythic Trait

The Show Must Go On

The first time Velquor reaches 0 hit points…

instead of falling…

  • he erupts with radiant laughter.
  • His cloak billows dramatically.
  • His injuries vanish.

He regains 250 hit points, and for the remainder of the encounter:

  • Allies within 60 feet cannot be frightened or charmed.
  • Allies add Velquor’s Charisma modifier (+10) to all saving throws.
  • Whenever an ally scores a critical hit, Velquor can immediately make a Rapier attack as a free action.
  • Fiends, undead, and creatures of evil alignment have disadvantage on attack rolls against him as his unwavering confidence becomes divinely inspiring.

“All right… THAT one hurt. But if you think that’s enough to stop the star of this story… you’ve got another thing coming!”

Design Philosophy

Where Brother Berrin is the quiet hand of providence, Brother Velquor is the Creator’s exuberant champion. He is bold, flamboyant, and convinced every battle deserves a heroic speech. Yet beneath the bravado is genuine courage. He draws the enemy’s attention, rallies his allies, and publicly calls out evil for what it is. His signature power, “You’re Despicable!”, isn’t merely an insult—it’s a divine judgment that strips away deception, exposing wickedness so that even the most powerful villain stands revealed before heaven and the righteous alike. It perfectly captures Velquor’s theatrical personality while making him a formidable celestial champion.
