What I Taught My Friends About W101 – A Wizard101 Extra Credit Assignment

February’s assignment was to write about what game mechanic I have taught my friends. I learned my advanced game mechanics from Catherine Wildbreeze and would not be a MAX level Life wizard without her help. Alas I do not have any screen shots of her assisting Steven GhostStalker.

Most of my friends fall into two camps. Hardcore Wizards are there for me when I NEED assistance, or Casual game-when-we-feel-like-it Wizards (my children and grandchildren fall into the second category). Hardcore Wizards are usually teaching me things about the game. Casual Wizards frequently don’t care about pet training, gardening, or fishing.

So I’m at a loss. What have I taught other wizards? Then it occurred to me, young wizards have been waxing eloquent over the fun in-game pop culture references ever since they first encountered Dorothy Gale on Unicorn Way and helping Marla Stinger “Fight Grubb”. I can’t claim to have taught wizards to track the pop culture references as there is a 37-page thread dating back to 2011 at the Wizard101 forum. What I HAVE done is taught some of my friends the above and beyond call of playing the game on one screen and fact checking against references on Google on another screen.

Calamity Plaguecaller (Ashley D.) has been pouring over my collected lists and sending me numerous references that I missed; Adam Usk, Aleksandr, Archmagus Lorcan, The Auroracle, Blackblade, Burning Hate, Captain Franklin and his crew, Captain Kravchuck, César, Danton, Desiccated Treebeard (how did I miss THIS one), Doc, Drusilla Morningbane, Dworgyn (HOW could I have forgotten him?), Geordi, Romo & Aemon Nighteyes, Inspector Fouché, Léon, Loother Ray (Ashley found this when I KNEW it was a reference but couldn’t find it.), Luska Charmbeak, Marshal Kamensky, Mellori, Nostradonimus, the Poisson Party quest on the Sea Chicken, Red Rosa, Semolina Pilchard, Thunder Snake, Torcido, Toulouse, Vigilants Perun and Jarilo, Vizier Faizal, Zurellia the ChitinSmasher, and this wonderful guest article on the Forlorn Tayg.

Brenda J G has also been pouring over my lists and sent along these further ones I missed; The Loremaster, Milos Bookwyrm, Zanna Fireflower,

Other young wizards have contributed here and there but I can truly say that I taught Ashley and Brenda to scour everything looking for references.

An index of all current pop culture reference articles can be found here.

Although I am well versed in Pop Culture references but I do not claim to have caught them all. Let me know your favorites in the comments and if I’ve missed one you caught, let me know so I can add it to the list.
