Pop Culture References in Wizard101 – Azteca

The NPCs of Azteca

Ten years ago a great comet appeared in the sky over Azteca, one of the oldest islands in the Spiral, a fragment of the First World. The comet panicked the Aztecosaurs and drove them to seek shelter in their underground mines. Most in the Spiral assumed Azteca was destroyed.

But Morganthe is drawn here to uncover the final secrets of Astral magic, the “primal Spiral” as it were. If she masters it, she can rewrite the words to the Song of Creation, and rebuild the Spiral into her own image.

The fourth world of the second arc, Azteca was added to the game November 2012. It is intended for level 80-90 wizards.

Cool Azteca Facts:
Xibalba
– (Mayan pronunciation: [ʃiɓalˈɓa]), roughly translated as “place of fright”, is the name of the underworld in Maya mythology. It is ruled by the Maya death gods and their helpers. In some Maya areas, the Milky Way is viewed as the road to Xibalba.

Tierra de Brea (translated as Tar Land) is a reference to the The La Brea Tar Pits in downtown Los Angelas, CA

Cenote – A cenote; American Spanish: [seˈnote]) is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater. The term originated on the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, where cenotes were commonly used for water supplies by the ancient Maya, and occasionally for sacrificial offerings. The term derives from a word used by the lowland Yucatec Maya—tsʼonoʼot—to refer to any location with accessible groundwater. (Thank you Christian C.)

Codex – Mesoamerican codices are manuscripts that present traits of the Mesoamerican indigenous pictoric tradition, either in content, style, or in regards to their symbolic conventions. The unambiguous presence of Mesoamerican writing systems in some of these documents is also an important, but not defining, characteristic, for Mesoamerican codices can comprise pure pictorials, native cartographies with no traces of glyphs on them, or colonial alphabetic texts with indigenous illustrations. Perhaps the best-known examples among such documents are Aztec codices, Maya codices, and Mixtec codices, but other cultures such as the Tlaxcaltec, the Purépecha, the Otomi, the Zapotecs, and the Cuicatecs, are creators of equally relevant manuscripts. (Thank you Christian C. for recommending this tidbit be added)

The Smoking Mirror Zombies and various forms of Quetzals are based on the twin Aztec deities of Air and Wind, Quetzalcoatl (Feathered Serpent) and his evil twin, Tezca-tlipoca (Smoking Mirror). These two gods engaged in a never-ending battle for control of the earth and its people. They represented the gentle and destructive winds and were symbolized by the planet Venus in its dual roles as Morning and Evening Star.

The Pira’Nyah Scissor Teeth are named for the piranha, a fresh-water, omnivorous fish that inhabits South American rivers, floodplains, lakes and reservoirs.

Ocelo the deck vendor for Azteca is one letter shy of being “Ocelot”. Ocelots and Jaguars where an important part of of Aztec Mythology.

Old Man Huehue the furniture vendor is an unusual name if we translate the Nahuatl (Pre-Colombian language of the Olmecs, Aztecs, and Incas) portion of his name. Huēhueh means “very old” (literally, “old old”). So, his name is Old Man Very Old.

Ezhua Bad Taste has an interesting name. He wants to wipe out the “Bad Taste” of death by washing out his mouth with your blood. “Ezhuahuacatl” is a Nahuatl word that means “Raining Blood” or “Shedder of Blood”

Tuia, one of the Lords of Light who is teaching Morganthe the Song of Creation is named for the Nahuatl word that translates as ‘soldier’.

Close but not close enough to call yet:
Razan Bitter Blood – Razan (Earth-616 Marvel Comics) First appeared 2017 four years after Azteca. Etymologists think the word ‘Razan’ compares the Hebrew ‘Rosh’, Sankrit ‘Raj’ and Latin ‘Rex’ all meaning “King or Regent”

Segundo Ortiz – A brand of Colombian coffee – https://coffeeopia.com/r/mission-coffee-works/segundo-ortiz
Tilizoc Stone CloudTizoc the seventh tlatoani of Tenochtitlan
Tlotzin Moon ThiefNopaltzin was a 13th-century Chichimec leader, a tlatoani.
